What primer should I use?
I build a paint booth in my basement and have compressed air for a
spray gun, but I would prefer to use a self-etching primer that
comes in a spray can.
What have you had the best success with?
I live in Utah, so corrosion isn't as big as a problem as other
cities, but I still want to use a quality primer.
Thanks for any help in advance.

AeroPRO makes a self-etching primer called 5915 Quick Etch.
Any reason this won't work?

I can't answer the first question. I've used several ..... different
manufacturers and different sales outlets. All worked well.

This will be terribly expensive and you won't get good, even coverage.
Use your compressor and a spray gun. You'll get real good at painting
by the time you get to the finish coats!

Both epoxy and urethane primers work well and are resistant to cracking
and chipping. You WILL ding the parts before you get them all assembled
together so a tough primer is good.

And you should. Check out your local auto paint store, and ask
questions. Tell them what you're using it on (aluminum) and ask about
application, viscosity, clean-up, and mixing ratios. Write it all
down. the stuff is pricey so you should get as much free advice as
possible!!!

This is a classic debate amongst RV'ers since day one. Pick what is
compatible with your needs, as well as your desired final finish paint.
Zinc Chromate is a good old standby, but has some health concerns,
supposedly. Epoxy primer is very durable but requires mixing as do other
self etching primers. Marhyde comes in a spray can AND in quarts/gallons
for use in spray equipment. I used it and like it, but not on steel. It
just doesn't adhere very well. I plan to go with rattle can zinc chromate
on mating surfaces only for my RV10. I primed EVERYTHING in my RV8 and it
was more work than I can truly justify. I live in New Mexico and nothing
rusts here either. Still, a primed structure, especially between sheet
layers and mating surfaces, will weather a more humid or corrosive
environment for future resale value.
Whatever you choose, follow the manufacturer's specs on use.

Each can is about $7.50 and it is the standard army green. Sherwin
Williams also makes a gray primer and is a little less expensive,
but the people at the paint store said the AeroPRO was a better
brand. They also told me that the AeroPRO will take longer to dry
whereas the Sherwin Williams will dry in 15 minutes (depending on
temperature of course).
