rv10man...I'm thinking the same way. I did some research on this yesterday. Sherwin Williams and Napa carry a product my Martin Senour. Napa's part number is 7220. It is $5.94 a can. S/W's number is 988 & $7.04. I put the url here for S/W because it has a picture and MSDS info. The color is gray. I have not picked any up yet. Hope I helped.

I just bought some cans of SEM Self-Etchng Primer #39683. Comes in
various colors. Was $8.50 at a local paint supply house.
CAUTION: See if you can find the stuff locally before ordering
through the mail. Shipping costs will get you because it ships as a
chemical product!

How much are you planning on priming? Have you used the SEM before?

I used SEM when painting my cabin and when priming a few other doodads. I
find that it's not as nice as Sherwin Williams GBP-988 (rattle can available
from SW Automotive branches for about $7/can), which is more durable (to
scratching and chafing when moving parts around), and the SW has a much
nicer nozzle that doesn't "burp" paint droplets or pool paint onto your
trigger finger. I also like the darker gray of the GBP-988 better, although
the aesthetics of primed surfaces ain't exactly important. 8^)
Just another data point...hope this helps.

I used SEM on parts of my RV8, mostly the steel stuff. (This was before the
days of factory powder coated weldments.) I found it to be pretty good, but
not as tough as epoxy primer. It seemed to not adhere to the aluminum as
well as the steel, whereas the Marhyde primer I used on the majority of the
alloy airframe did not stick to steel very well at all. Gotta try it out on
scrap and see how you like it! For the RV10, I plan to go with the old
standby: zinc chromate in rattle cans, to prime only the mating surfaces. I
spent waaaay too much time and money on priming the entire RV8
airframe...skins and all. It's just not worth it IMHO, if you plan to
hangar your airplane for the long term.

Since I have 5 cans of the SEM, I'll use that up and maybe try the SW
when I run out. It's great getting input from others.
DAN: I found some fuel resitant RTV from Dow Corning... $120 for 221
grams!! I think I'll stick with Proseal.
Thanks,
Matthew

I stopped in at my local NAPA to pick up some of the 7220 rattle can
self etching primer and saw that they also have a 7222 primer that is
specifically a corrosion inhibitor (zinc chromate content?). The
7220 doesn't list corrosion protection as an attribute but it is self
etching. Both products say they work with aluminum and the prep
directions are the same: clean the surface first. Both are
approximately the same cost so I bought a couple cans of each to try
out.
Since the whole reason that I'm going to prime the non-alclad
surfaces is for corrosion protection, why wouldn't I use the 7222? I
see a lot of references to the 7220 product - what am I missing?
I've included the link below for the Martin Senour products.
