I am a first time builder and need some assistance with the VS for
the RV10. I'm a little confused with Step 6 (page 6-2). It says to
Machine Countersink all of the #30 holes… for 1/8" flush rivets. I
have gone through my Avery RV10 tool kit and can't seem to locate
anything that's listed as a countersink tool. Is there such an
animal? Vans section 5E says I need a countersink tool and a drill
motor. I need to countersink VS1008 and am not sure what kind of
tool I need to ask for. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I do not want to remove too much aluminum.

Use the countersink cage that is black with a knurled ring on the
outside, it has a 1/4" silver shaft out the back to attach to the drill.
There should be a three fluted cutter with different sized pilots. Look
for the one that has a #30 pilot, usually stamped on the side of the
cutter, this threads into the other side of the countersink cage. Once
together loosen the knurled ring on the cage and you will be able to
pull the two sections of the cage body away from each other allowing one
to rotate. Adjust this until the depth of cut on the cutter is correct.
If you still have the part numbers on the tools they should be #19360 on
the cage and #1052 on the cutter.

Mike,
Thanks, I had this all along. I just wasn't able to find it when I
needed it.

Follow Mike Lauritson's advice re: how to adjust the countersink cage. Make
yourself a small strip of sheet aluminum with various sized dimpled holes to
use as a depth guage. Adjust the countersink to a definitely too shallow
depth, make the cut and check how the test dimple nests into it. Too deep a
countersink allows the dimples to pucker down too far. It's not rocket
science by any means but you want them to nest properly for best structural
integrity and visual appeal.
Have fun! You'll get so used to dialing in a countersink cage that you'll
be able to do it blindfolded in no time. As a time-saving measure, you could
buy a set of three or four countersink cages and set each one up for only
one size piloted countersink...#40, #30, #8 screw and #6 screw. These are
the most commonly used sizes.
