I just bought myself a band saw (the great thing about building a
plane is that its an opportunity to treat yourself to all sorts of
new tools), and am trying to choose the right blade. The one it came
with was about 1/4" wide, and about 6 teeth per inch. I immediately
changed that for one that was 15 teeth per inch, but the new one is
only about 1/8" wide. This would be great if I was cutting elaborate
scrollwork, but for cutting a straight line, its actually a
hindrance - its tougher to stay on the line. But nobody around here
seems to sell a (59-1/4") fine-tooth blade that's wider.
Can anyone suggest where I might be able to find one?

Harbor Freight and Sears are my go-tos for 62" blades. There are also
several custom blade shops out there, including:
http://www.bandsawblades.com (gotta love an intuitive domain name...)
Best of luck,

We bought one from a local shop, custom-made. It was one of those "word of
mouth" things, where we were in Sears trying to find what we needed to fit
our Craftsman band saw, when another guy in the tool section said, "Pssst.
Pssst. I can tell you where to get a blade..." out of the side of his mouth.
Apparently we got a weird length blade as well, even though we went out of
our way to try to buy the "standard" size.
This company is right in downtown Montgomery, AL, and I know they'll ship,
so if you can't find a local business, let us know. It only took them a
couple of days, and seems like we paid $30 for two blades.

HarborFreight (www.harborfreight.com) stocks many metal cutting bandsaw blades. I didn't notice your particular length during a quick look. If you have access to welding equipment, it is pretty easy to snip to length & rejoin the blade as necessary. HarborFreight even sells in 100' lengths exactly for folks who want to do this.
Search on bandsaw & you can scroll through what they've got.

I got mine at Lowe's. It was 18 TPI, about a 1/4" wide....and less
than $10. Works great for 2 cents worth.
I was able to cut the HS 1008L & H1008 from the channel stock by
clamping it to a piece of straight stock and using the miter guage to
feed it through. The blade didn't wander and I dut the 2" x 2.5"
without laying it down or changing position.

Lr,
If you can wait till Monday (it's on my favorites at the office) I will send
you a link to a company that will make and even has stock of many many
bandsaw blades, I have a 59.5" delta. I bought a couple of 14 or 18 tpi
blades and they were like $7 or $8 bucks each. 59.25" should not be a
problem, the blade tensioner should be able to make up for that small amount
over the total length. I hae used the coarse blade with heavy aluminum stock,
worked ok..best advice I can give regarding bandsaws is set them up
right...take the time to get the tracking, tension, load bearing and all the
other steps in those un-opened pages of the manual. :)

I had the same blade wandering problem with what sounds like the same
saw. I found some places online that sell blades and will make them
custom. I wound up getting a different saw and it made all the
difference in the world.
