Home -> RV-10 topic: duh... don't dimple everything

Author: "jaybrinkmeyer" <jaybrinkmeyer@...> Time: Tue Nov 18, 2003 12:18 pm PST Link

Okay, I admit it... I dimpled the (web) spar-to-rib VS holes. Lesson
learned is that building rookies should dig out the referenced rivet
first to determine what needs to be done to the hole.

Duh #2 is don't reverse the hole if you make a dimple by mistake as
that causes the AL to become "worked" and may lead to part failure.

I was told to carefully examine the holes for any apparent cracks.
If cracked, toss the part. No cracks were seen, so onward ho...

Van's said that the primary airframe loading is carried by the skin
to spar/rib. Don't know if I buy that, but it makes me feel a little
better. Anyone else care to comment?

Jay,

Don't get too worked up about it, because you'll probably reverse-dimple, or
drill wrong size, a few more holes before you're done building! I've
drilled, dimpled, countersunk, and riveted, at least 14,000 holes in my RV8,
and not all of them are the size or configuration they were meant to be
initially. I even dimpled a row of holes the wrong way, then went back and
drove them the right way. Guess what? No cracks. Plane flies just
fine...four years, 350 hrs, including acro and several less than wonderful
landings.

Build the plane. Do your best to do quality work, but don't freak out if
you don't. It's an airplane, not a Swiss watch.

My $.02 on the matter.

Have fun!

I must admit, I bucked my first rivets on Sunday... and made the same
mistake!!! (albeit on a piece of scrap...)

I'm guessing the same would be true for holes that had to be re-
dimpled in the correct direction? i.e. they weren't deep enough the
first time. I had to do this to most of the holes around the
perimeter of my VS skin.

Jake, I'm not as far along as you a lot of you guys, but I'm slowly
moving there. I'm taking a lot of pictures along the way.

I made a similar boo-boo. Started to dimple in the VS spar where you are supposed to countersink. Vans did tell me to reverse dimple the hole which I did do per their instructions. The advantage I had in my mistake was that I was able to drill out the worked aluminum for the most part because it called for a countersink anyway. They said this would be no problem. I looked at it very close after the process and couldn't see any cracks. I too would be more worried if it was thinner or only one of 2 parts being being joined i.e. skin to rib. This mistake was between the skin and rib. Pay attention!!! It was very time consuming to go back a second time.
