Have a little of the stinkey stuff left over from a repair on the
fuel tank of my 6A last year. Way out of date. I plan on using it to
seal up the trailing edge of the rudder unless anyone can talk me out
of it in the next couple of days.

If it's still pliable and in a usable state, go for it. We used "old"
proseal on our trailing edge for our rudder too, mainly because we were too
impatient to wait on our new 6oz tube. We'll use that new stuff on the
elevators, etc.

Hiya TC,
I also have an ample supply of waaay out of date stinky stuff and plan to
use it. I'll mix up a test batch first just to see if it's viable or not.

Since the sealant is non-structural (only to assist for alignment), I
also used some out of date Pro-seal. It was a little thicker than I
would have liked but ended up working just fine. In fact, I used it
on just one side, clamped everything straight and let it dry for a
couple of days. I found that it was straight enough so that I didn't
use it on the other side when I riveted down the skins. I did have a
good solid flat edge that I was able to align everything with but in
the end I didn't have to worry about riveting everything togehther
before the Pro-seal set. I don't think that it would have been a
problem but I found that this method allowed me to focus on getting a
straight trailing edge and then worry about getting good double flush
rivets.
The key I found with the double flush riveting was driving the rivet
straight down as far as the skin would allow and then angling the
driver to the finished angle at the last moment. Pretty much as the
directions imply.

Why does one have to use Proseal? Couldn't you just use something
like silicon seal instead? If not, what's the difference?

Folks, I have been told that the reason for the proseal suggestion
is to help keep everything tight during riveting of the trailing
edge. The riveting process could result in a wavy edge if it isn't
kept rigid AND the rivets need to be driven in stages. Any method
that keeps the trailing edge rigid and straight would work.

Paint will stick to Proseal.
Paint doesn't stick to silicone RTV.
