I know I can order them from the various tool companies, such as Avery
or Cleveland, but has anybody found a local shop that carries them?
Auto-paint stores perhaps?

I've seen them in NAPA and at my local Sherwin Williams store.

Paint stores, hardware stores, industrial cleaning supply stores. They're
plentiful.

Normally a paint supplier has them--auto paint shop supply stores. They
might be more expensive than ordering them from the catalog company, but no
shipping and convenient.

Dave:
You can buy 6"x9" scotchbrite pads in packs of 20 through any Ace
Hardware Store. They are available in two grades. Here are the
details:
Medium (Maroon) Ace SKU# 1085067
Fine (Gray) Ace SKU# 1085059
They should retail for around $20.00 per box.

I used WWW.McMasterCarr.com. About $12 for a huge box that will take
looong time to go through.

Also try Home Depot, or Lowes. They usually have them much cheaper, but only
the red pads. Finer pads are available from Auto paint stores everywhere.

Checked my local HF, they didn't have any pads. Home Depot & Lowes
directed me to cleaning supplies, although I checked paint/sanding as
well. They had some different colors, but none of the maroon.
I'll check Ace today, and then amybe an auto paint store.
Thanks for the info guys!

I was in my HF store last night and they have a kit with 2" and 3"
rubber adapters and 2 each of 3 grades of pads. The spare pads places
were empty. I didn't want to get stuck with something I couldn't get
pads for so I passed on them. That, and they weren't on sale!!!

No offense but why on earth are you going to so much effort to find
Scotch-brite pads. In less than the time it takes me to find my keys
and get in my truck I can order them online. I buy everything I can
online. I know of several places you can order these from and one is
bound to be close enough to you that if you order it today it will be on
your door step tomorrow.
http://www.mcmaster.com/ type in 2531 and it will take you to that page
in catalog. The hand pads on that page aren't 3M but they are the same
thing. They ship most stuff from either their Atlanta or Chicago
warehouse.
http://www.mscdirect.com/PDF.process?pdf=860 they have warehouses all
over the country.
http://www.averytools.com. they are in dallas, just call them

I recommend that everyone just get on the internet or the phone and
order this stuff. It sure takes a lot less time than driving around to
local stores trying to find one that has what you want. And on top of
that in most cases you will save money.

My two cents worth on that is this: Buying locally helps your local economy, and I think that is at least worth the try to find something in your neighborhood before sending your money off somewhere else. I buy online also, but I also buy locally when I can, sometimes even if it costs more.

Let me start this rant with this. . .

With all the time and money I save by shopping online, I support my local community by going out to eat and to a movie or other entertainment more often. I also support local service businesses for automotive repair or home maintenance. If there is a good specialty shop with a knowledgeable
staff and reasonable prices, I will buy from them because they offer much more than just a product. However, with places like Best Buy, Circuit City, Wallmart, Home Depot, and the like taking over with their minimum wage morons, retail has gone to hell in a hand basket. I have no desire or
reason to support them. They just want my money and don't provide me anything but an over priced product and a lot of hot air. Since I have to do all the research and trouble shooting of the products I buy myself anyway, why should I support these idiots?

Since you asked why - While I realize that the big box stores and the like do spew a lot of hot air to an extent, they do on the other hand also provide jobs for hundreds of people ("minimum wage morons" as you put it) thatare not sucking unemployment benefits from your taxes that you pay. Also, some of these "morons" are the sons, daughters, and grandchildren of peoplejust like you and me.

None taken! Basically, it's just something I've been looking at for a
couple of weeks, so when I'm in one of the stores (love the HF sales!) I
take a look. For something like this, I'd prefer to find a local
supplier in case I discover (and w/ my kids it happens more often than I
like to think about) that my supply is gone, I can run and get some if I
need some. I actually do a good bit of ordering on online, but I like
to have local sources for consumables.
