For anyone undecided about how to treat the bare metal I'm about to
start my RV-10A Empennage build and after doing considerable
research on corrosion prevention of commercial aircraft, have
decided to use a new material treatment that removes the old health
and environmental hazards associated with Alodine. Here's a quote
from their literature.
PreKote™ (www.pantheonchemical.com/PreKote.htm) is a non-chromated
surface pretreatment replacement utilizing a safe, hazard-free
process. PreKote offers off-the-chart adhesion, improved paint
flexibility, and superior corrosion protection on painted surfaces.
PreKote has passed stringent testing by the U.S. Department of
Defense (www.cnrma.navy.mil/REC/prekote04012003-signed.pdf ), The
Boeing Company and other coating industry leaders. By eliminating
the need for chromate conversion coatings, acid etches, solvent
washes and other toxic processes, PreKote can reduce paint
preparation time and costs by up to 40% achieving results superior
to hazardous processes and products.
Bottom line is this is all you need to prep the surface, including
composite, prior to application of a primer, runs at $35/Gal which
treats 120-125 Sq ft. 5 Gal for $135.
I am also using Sherwin Williams Epoxy Primer, which is a Chromated,
non-sanding, high performance, water and corrosion resistant primer.
It is most forgiving to spray and cure conditions. Meets Mil-P-
23377F.(http://www2.sherwin-williams.com/aerospace/convprimers.asp)
In all my closed sections I am applying LPS-3 to wherever there is
adjoining structure, this will reduce the possible moisture
accumulation between structure.
