At long last, I've finished my VS. Should bother taking off the blue
plastic now? My EAA advisor made a comment about Van's recommending
that ALL plastic be removed due to corrosion finding its way under
the stuff...

I was just at Van's Friday and this came up during my tour. Bruce
specifically told me 6 months, then the corrosion could begin under
the blue stuff. In the case of the older models, the parts may sit
in stock for 5 months before they ship to a customer...so not very
good to leave it on for extended periods after construction. Not
such an issue for the first wave of -10 builders, but I plan to heed
their advice, they know better than I do. Additionally, the 2nd -10
is being assembled, the tail cone is done along with some of the
wing, and ALL the parts are stored with the plastic off (saw them
myself)...and I'm sure they will be done sooner than any of us!!! I
won't even get into what he had to say about priming...
BTW, what a sweet looking airplane. Biggest surprises: the
sturdiness of the "glass lid" -- 4000lb crush test!! -- although
the door issues still aren't worked out. The leg room. And the
seats were VERY comfortable.

For what it's worth, I have been leaving mine on until finished with
each section. Obviously that means using the soldering iron to remove
the rivet strips. After completing an assembly, I remove each section
of plastic and then immediately reapply the plastic before putting
the section away for storage. Reapplying the plastic leaves it on
loosely with curled edges, which is what I want for better separation
between pieces. This avoids the issue of the plastic being hard to
remove later and allows air to get to the aluminum but keeps some
protection. I'll remove the plastic after final assemble in a couple
of months.

Gang, I'm just a lowly ol 7 guy who has no more blue stuff around the
shop but let me just throw out a very simple thought. At the
completion of your project you are going to scotchbrite pad the
entire airplane so those real nice pretty skins are going to become
dull with swirls over the entire surface. I'm already painting with
Imron. For those who wish to remove the "blue stuff" do not fell as
if you are "working against the gods":-) For me, man I used the ol
soldering iron on the emp thinking man I being so careful. By the
time I got to the wings I looked at all those rivet lines and said !#%
$!@# this:-) Guess what, the wings are fine, the fuselage is fine
and the emp has long ago been set free from the "blue stuff".
Just a thought from an experienced builder.

I absolutely, positively agree. I ripped that nasty plastic off every piece
as soon as I could for my -8. Every scuff and scratch is now well hidden
beneath PPG urethane and clearcoat. Please folks, do NOT obsess over every
little ding and booger on your airplane!!
JUST BUILD THE PLANE.
Oh, and have fun while you're doing it too. :)
