Well, after 429.5 hours of my and my helpers time I have finished the
tail cone kit. I have some torque seal on order for the bolts that I
have touqued and don't need to remove again. A couple of notes on
finishing up the fiberglass tips. I found the owens corning pink
polystyrene foam in 24" x 8 foot lenght. I used it to make the molds
for the end caps. I was worried about the polyester resin melting the
foam. The trick I knew about from working on previous glass project
was to lay a layer of wax paper from the kitchen between the foam and
the 9 oz glass. Cut out the foam so it fits snug in the end caps
with it installed on the HS or VS. Work the elevators and rudder
through there travel and make sure there is at least 1/8" clearance
at all times. I used a die grinder and a sanding pad to cup the foam
for clearance. Have the foam flush of just inset into the cap so that
you can lay a piece of mat on the face. Let it set overnight. I used
a long screwdriver and dug the foam away the next day. The wax paper
worked great. It pulled free from the foam and was easy to remove
from the cured fiberglass. I can't fit the tail cone in the house
because it is too big for any doors in my house except the front
door. Tail cone in the livingroom for 9 months or so is not allowed,
I know, I don't understand either. My wife has drawn the line on
that one. I am going to make a crate to hold the tail cone and put
it on the back deck under cover. I will try to upload couple of
photos to the photo section. Randy 40006. Empecone done.

You dont want to use polyester resin on the epoxy fiber glass parts. Vans parts
were made with epoxy resin which is not compatable with polyester resin. At
least thats the way I understand it....Anyone?

My .02 cents and some research from RV & Rocket lists and 'glass "experts" at APV. Polyester resin will bond to polyester partsBUT not to epoxy parts. Epoxy resin will bond to both Polyester and Epoxy. Once you use Epoxy you must continue to use Epoxy. HRII N561FS 160Hrs KABONG Hoping to start RV-10.

That is true. They are incompatible. West Systems epoxy kits are the best
out there. Highly recommended.

All of the fiberglass parts supplied in the RV-10 emp./tail cone kit
are made with polyester resin.

RV parts that are made with polyester resin are always white (gel
coat). RV parts that are not white are epoxy (eather wet lay-up or
prepreg.). Parts in yur RV-10 kit that likely will be epoxy are
cowling, wheel pants, gear leg fairings, emp. fairing, and spinner.
