I ordered a small quantity of tank sealer from Van's... do folks use
some sort of applicator gun (that I don't have) or mix it by hand
and apply with a popcicle stick or some such? Sure does stink!

I've done both, and I will never hand mix/ratio again if I have a choice! A
friend of mine gave me a sealant gun, and man that sucker is too cool. Wish
I had it when I built my tanks.
You can find Semco pneumatic sealant guns on ebay pretty darn cheap. I
highly recommend snagging one if you can. The advantage is that you only
squeeze out as much as you need. And in my experience, the pot lasts
slightly longer when encased in the cartridge, rather than sitting out on
the bench. One aspect to this might be the absolutely *perfect* mix you get
every time with cartridges...I know that when I weighed and mixed by hand, I
tended to lean toward using slightly more accelerant just to be sure...and
the pot life drops pretty dramatically when you do that. With the
cartridges/gun, the guesswork is history.
It'll cost you more, no doubt, if you use the cartridges (rather than quart
cans), and if you have to pay for a gun (rather than beg/borrow/steal), but
the extra cost is well worth it in the greatly simplified setup and
cleanup...at least in my opinion.
For those of you who will be slow-building your wings & tanks, the sealant
gun is a great investment. When I built my tanks, I said nahhh...can't be
that much more convenient. Boy was I wrong.
Just my 2 cents, have fun!

As Dan pointed out, the Semco guns can sure make things easier. I used a
gun on my -8 tanks initially, then just went with hand mixing later. I'm
used to working with messy, gooey stuff (flat roofed, old house...LOTS of
roofing tar experience!). I got pretty good with just using craft sticks
(popsicle) on paper plates. You'll get used to the smell, and might even
come to enjoy it. Tastes pretty good smeared on crackers too. !
The mix ratio isn't absolutely critical, especially for the trailing edge
application, so don't stress over it too much. A dark, slate grey color is
pretty much what you're looking for. If you go too thin on the black stuff,
it will take a loooong time to cure....maybe over a week, but it will cure
eventually.
Oh, a really neat trick to keep your hands clean is to wear two pair of NON
POWDERED latex surgical gloves. Once the outer pair gets too sticky, you
can just peel them off, slap on another pair, and keep going. I used
lacquer thinner for tool cleanup and it worked great. Coleman fuel (white
gas) is also commonly used. KEEP YOUR RIVETING EQUIPMENT CLEAN. I can't
stress this more. A sealant smeared rivet set will goober up a riveting job
in a hurry. Wipe the squeezer sets clean for EVERY rivet.

Hi Jay. I talked with a rv8 builder, under construction. He showed me his 2 part containers of proseal (small activator container and sealant container), and he said he actually weighed out the 2 mixtures to get it right....1 to 10 ratio.
Just passing along what another builder is doing. Happy T-giving.......Greg

I will certainly endorse comments made by Brian and Dan in the use of
Proseal.
If you are mixing it yourself, here is a cheap and ideal way to apply
the goop. Go to your nearest farm supply store and find the vet
section. Buy a couple 35ml (cc) disposable syringes. They cost like
a buck a piece. You may need to snip the nipple off the front of the
syringe depending on how wide a line of proseal you desire. Mix up
your batch, spoon it into the syringe, insert the plunger
and "instant applicator".
Works great and allows you to mix up only the amount you want to use.
