Home -> RV-10 topic: Tailcone Pics - Buy more clecos!

Author: "rv7pete" <RV10Pete@...> Time: Mon Jan 5, 2004 10:34 am PST Link

Hello!

Per request, I have posted 3 pictures of my tailcone sitting on my
bench. They are in the photos section under folder Rv10Pete. I
don't think you will have to move out of your shop until you begin to
join the two fuselage halves together. I expect to build my wings
and the main cabin right where you see the tailcone!

The bench is just short of 12' long and just a couple inches short of
3' wide. You can see the size of the tail isn't so bad that it won't
fit on the bench. At one point, I actually set it on the floor
between the 2 benches..It was too tight...so I also found myself
standing on top of the bench to put in clecos and drill.....

OH YEA - BUY MORE CLECOS! I opened my last bag of 100 clecos and
could have used a hundred more. I think there are 500-600 clecos in
the picture in use....and that's all I had in the shop. I ended up
stealing from one place to put into another.

Pete (Soon to begin the primer process again! Argh!)

Pete,

I just ordered 250 more #40 clecos but didn't even think about #30s.
Any guess as to how many of those you needed on the tailcone? I've
only got whatever the standard number is that came with the Avery kit.

Hi Bob,

You only need the silver ones for the most part on the tailcone...I
only used a dozen of the coppers......what you have for them will be
plenty!

=============

I also answered a question for Jay off-line....I'm posting it here
for the rest to consider:

Hey Jay!

My shop gets cleaned every night.....all tools back in place..ready
for a fresh start. It was a trick that was taught to me by another
builder and it really does save time in the long run..as well as keep
dirt out of the house.

In answer to your question. I did steal cleco's and move them
around, but the directions want to get the cone "torsionally rigid".
To do so, you have to have all the pieces together at one time. The
head bands are a bugger. I missed the instruction to heavily flute
the 2 hole tabs on the bulkheads...and fought to get them in the
first time....I finally caved in...took out all the clecos on the top
two skins..fluted the tabs and then had to fight even harder to get
them back in. In the long run, I'm not sure it was worth it.....but
I did put a cleco in every single hole up across the tops..then took
out a cleco, drilled and replaced it. Otherwise, things were moving
around too much. If you hit evey second or third hole you totally
miss some of the tabs. Since these parts are curved....I found it
important to use too many as opposed to too few.

Long answer...sorry...yes I think it will take more clecos....I was
filling every third or fourth hole in some places on the sides.....in
order to have enough for the top.

As always, your results may vary!

Pete

Thanks! Elevators seem to be going quickly so I'll be joining you in
the tailcone shortly I think. When do your wings arrive? Mine are
scheduled for 1/26 shipping.
