Hi gang!
I have been following all of the hoopla around the Subie engines with
interest. I'm also tired of hearing/seeing Lycosaurs that need all
this rebuild work.
Soooo...I call the Continental people today and had a nice
conversation with the head of Cust Service, Mr. Mike Thompson. He
said that they are still about 2 years out on having something
definate. Honda will not go to market unless the engine is fully
certified ...as they don't want any blemishes on their name and
corporate image.
I asked Mike how we (The RV-10 group) encourage them to Go
forward....he said they are as stunned as we are that Van's has sold
more than 170 kits in less than 6 months. He said they have been
having fairly regular dialogues with Van's...and that Van's is
definately the market that they see themselves selling to most.
I asked about a higher than 225HP design for the 10. He said that it
was definately part of the discussion, but that would have to be down
the road a bit more...since the protoype (currently in revision 3) is
a 4 cylinder. Turbocharging is also an option they are discussing.
At this point, Honda has not given the program the final 'go forward'
sign-off, but indications are pretty good. I pointed out to him that
Van's was the largest Lycoming dealer out there....and he said yes,
we are fully aware of that!
He gave me his direct line and asked that I check in with him every 3
months or so.....which I will do and keep you all posted. I
explained that many builders were already writing their engine
checks....he said there was nothing that he could do at this time.
So I gave him the 'gung ho - get with it encouragement cheer'....and
said so-long....for now.
I am also looking into the Bombardier option just to see what the
latest is with them.
See you in the shop!
Pete

Pete,
This is exactly what I have been looking for. I know if Honda puts a
product out it will be top notch. Thank You for doing the extra work
checking out other companies and posting the information.
I also heard that Toyota may also be in the aircraft engine market.
Has anyone else heard this? confirm or deny?
Did Continental people divulge any extra info.? Will they be using
dual mags? Low pressure Fuel injection? In other words will these
engines not be relying solely on electric to fly? (i.e.. In tank fuel
pumps, electronic ignition, etc.) These are a few of the items that
keep leading me back toward the antique aircraft engine.
Thanks Again
Scott

"Traditional" engine manufacturer's should be on notice that a
substantial portion of their market is going to go elsewhere if they
can't meet customer needs as well as price-point. If something other
than Lycoming/Continental meets my requirements then I'll buy it and
they'll be left with nothing but table scraps from the flat-growth
GA market.

The Honda looks better to me than the Bombardier.
I saw the Bombardier engine at Oshkosh and it looked like alot
of things could go wrong (running 6000 rpm) with so many parts
involved just to increase hp. The Honda looks more redundant with
the more traditional direct drive rpm engine range and much less
moving parts.

Right on, pardner. The O-360 in my RV8 has basically done it's job for four
years, but ate up four jugs along the way. Overleaning? Shock cooling?
Winds of fate? Who knows. It just goes to show that if a pilot has to
continually nurse and spoonfeed his powerplant, then his attention is being
diverted away from the important stuff...SA, looking for traffic, and
spotting spam can bogies to shoot down.
I used to be firmly entrenched in the "conventional aircraft engine"
mindset. No longer. It's just ridiculous that such an expensive hunk of
steel and alloy should fail major components in such a short amount of time.
My GMC pickup has 140,000 miles on it's 350V8, and even though I flog it
mercilessly, it still keeps going year after year. Feed it fresh oil
regularly, a set of plugs, wires and filters, and it's happy. Not so the
Lycosaur. It gets the job done, but I'm tired of fighting it every annual.
What's next? Spalled cam lobes? Stuck valves?
Bring on the Honda, the diesels, the Subies, Doobies and Yoobies....I'm
ready to buy...
