As promised.....
I spoke with Luc at Bombardier today. He is pretty jazzed up about
what he is bringing to market. But....like all companies....it was
hurry up and wait. There were some definate 'politically correct'
answers.....but here's the low down on what's important to RV
builders:
First, there won't be an engine ready for us until the third phase.
Currently they are in phase one. Phase one is when they are doing
thier beta testing. I offered my plane, but it's not done and they
are already well into testing. Phase two is when they will offer
them to CERTIFIED buyers....(does this sound just like Garmin or
what?!) Phase 3 is when it will go to markets like the experimentals.
Second, it will only be sold as a firewall forward solution......and
only THROUGH THE MANUFACTURER.....i.e. Vans.
Third, the kit manufacturer will have to develop their own engine
mount. Once Van's would then send the mount back to Bombardier,
Bombardier will develop the FWF kit including hoses, baffles, etc.
but then it's up to Van's to design the cowl to go around the FWF kit
as put together by Bombardier.
If Van's isn't willing to develop the engine mount etc, then the
product won't come through those channels.
Luc wouldn't say whether they were having conversations with Vans,
but did elude to the market as a whole and the impression that I got
was pretty firm that they are.
Fourth, the engine has been designed to work much like your car
engine. It will be set up such that, (again) if the manufacturer,
i.e. Van's wants to develop an air conditioning unit, heating unit,
and other accessories to work in their kits, it would be possible to
have climate control just like you have in your car....where you set
the temp you want it to be.....and it just works.....just like your
car.
I asked if I could run down to the Chevy dealership buy a climate
control module to install...the answer was of course NO, but the RS-
232 port will be there to connect to such things.
I expressed my concern about running plumbing and laying out my panel
and the fact that I would need more details by summer. The bottom
line is....this stuff might be available for my SECOND RV-10.
The good news is that they are flying every day...logging lots of
hours.....and firmly believe that they will UNDER promise and OVER
deliver.
I have my fingers crossed, the idea of single lever, turbo, A/C and
good heat with no carbon monoxide....make me drool.....and the
rumored price is that it will cost no more than an IO-540 with
fadec...and will use pretty much any fuel you can put into it...and
you can even mix avgas and mogas...and the anti-knock sensor will
compensate......and the cold-start temp is -20 degrees...which is
important here in Iowa since it's only 6 degrees here today!
Cheers!

Knowing how "pro Lycoming" and anti-alternative Van's
is, I wouldn't hold your breath. Van's and Lycoming
have been in business together for quite some time,
and they are usually not very receptive to the subject
of alternative power plants. Not to mention, the R&D
required to engineer a FWF package, probably wouldn't
be too high on their list of priorities. It would
have to be REALLY impressive to get the old man to
change his ways, I would bet. (Heck, I sound like I
know the guy or something. Not really, just a gut
instinct of how he (they) do business).
You never know. I haven't spoken with them in quite
some time, but at least their history represents this
philosophy.
