Since Honda and Bombardier have been mentioned, anyone look at the
sma engine?
http://www.smaengines.com/en/index_en.shtml
I spoke with the US rep, I think his name is Rick. It sounds like a
pretty good engine. The SFC #'s are real low. The website says the
engine is 200hp up to 10k altitude with the turbo, but they now have
it up to the full 230hp for not just takeoff, but up to 10k. I think
that would be a great engine, at around 5,000ft the engine starts
putting out more HP than the normally aspirated 260hp Lyc. I'd
imagine the TAS of the RV10 would be quite good at altitude with the
turbo. After 10k the HP starts to drop off.
I asked Rick about the RV and he said there had been some discussion
with Van, but in the beginning (several years ago) was not
interested, and now has at least been willing to talk. My take on it
was that Van was concerned with the cost. It is expensive, no doubt
about it. It's no longer so experimental, you can get an STC for a
C182 and other production aircraft to put this engine in. Ready for
the cost... He said, the complete FWF package, including a new cowl,
literally everything down to the last bold to make the conversion on
a C182 is $77k! ouch. They are targeting a 3000TBO which if you
can look away from the $$$$$$ for a sec does make it better. Not to
mention it burns 30% less fuel for the same HP than a Lyc. The fuel
controller is setup for Jet-A and I was told Diesel would not be a
good idea.
Also, they mentioned the same criteria as Bombardier, that it would
be up to Van's to develop the mount and cowl, then sell it only with
the kit.
Anyway, I thought I'd throw it out there.

IF I had $77K lying around to drop on an engine, why would I bother
building an airplane instead of buying it off-the-shelf? IMHO, this
one loses by a mile in the price vs. value category.
