Home -> RV-10 topic: Other goodies for tailcone

Hey kids,

As long as you are ordering goodies to put into your kits....be sure
to order the cable exit fairings from Avery. Right now they come 3
to a kit, but for the RV-10 there should be 4 since there is a second
trim tab. I am cutting mine in from the inside to make them even
smoother....and since I haven't primered or attached the tailcone
side skins yet, I can drill and dimple prior to attaching when
reaching them could be a real issue. Also, the plans call for
attaching the solenoid......but I don't think it's included in the
kit at this point. Does it come later? Or do you have to provide
your own?

Pete

Solenoid? You mean servo? They came in a small white box...mount on a deck
in the 'cone I think. Too far down the road for me just yet...still working
the rudder.

Hummm. I seem to recall receiving something that looked an awful lot
like a (trim tab?) solenoid. Please help enlighten the unwashed
building masses (okay at least me) with an explanation of why cable
exit fairings are a must-have item....

OK, I called it the wrong thing......page 10-24 its the ES-24115
Master Relay.....which I now assume is not included since its not on
my inventory sheet.

Also, to this I say ah-ah-ah-- I didn't say must have .....it is only
of 'goody' status. The cable exit fairings aren't a nescessity by
any means....but if you've seen one, they do clean up the look a
bit...and hey...you might even gain a hundreth or so a an entire knot
by putting them on. I was merely saying...if you plan to use them as
I do..NOW is the time to drill, deburr, dimple and install these
babies....before you get your cone all buttoned up. Besides..they
are pretty cheap....and I'm betting they will keep the morning dew
and heaven forbid...the rain ...out a bit when washing down the
sides....

Cheers! ;-}

Ah, I see now. Master relay. Can get these from any Cole Hersee vendor.
Just need a 12V battery solenoid rated for continuous duty. The starter
solenoid is almost identical except rated for intermittent duty. They both
typically get mounted with the battery onto the same tray. At least it's
that way on the -8.

The rudder cable exit fairings do dress up the airplane but are certainly
not required. With the tail of the RV10 sticking up as high as it does,
they would be more noticeable than on the taildraggers.

I've been thinking about my electrical system as I'm building and
monitoring the AeroElectric list. Recommendation from expert Bob
Nuckolls is to mount the starter contactor in the engine
compartment. Reasoning behind the starter contactor location is to
allow the hookup of the alternator b-lead to it and keep the noisey
wire out of the cockpit. Recommendation for the battery contactor
(and ground power contactor if equipped) is to have those as close to
the battery as possible.

The AeroElectric list is a tremendous resource with lots of good info
and solid advice - highly recommended for all things electrical.

Pete,

I was just getting ready to order the fairings from Avery and it
appears that you use one per cable exit and the kit includes 3 (one
spare). Is that incorrect and you actually need 2 per cable exit?
I'm trying to figure out the need for 4.

I think the need for 4 comes from the fact that there are 2
elevator trim tabs, in addition to the 2 rudder cables.

You can use 2 for the rudder cable exits and 2 for the elevator trim
tab push rod exits if you want to.

You really only need 2, but if you chose to try to add a fairing on
the trim tab cables, you would need 4. I have looked at the slot on
the trim tab inspection plates several times, and have not decided
what to do with it yet. I do know this, I'm going to remove the LP4-
3's and replace them with flush rivets. I'll have to countersink
the steel cable holder, and then dimple the skins, but I think it
would look much better once done...so then the decision, to add a
fairing or not.....and then the bigger question......are the ones
from Avery used for the rudder cables big enough? I'll take a
second look and let you know what I come up with.

Thanks. I was trying to figure out how you were using 4 of the
fairings for the rudder cables, thus the confusion. I'll be
interesting in seeing how your inspection plates come out. I did
mine per plans and just moved on. I was wondering why the plans
called for LP4-3s instead of solid rivets but...
