Home -> RV-10 topic: Speaking of fuel tanks... auxilliary tanks

Author: "Lance" <lryahoo@...> Time: Thu Jan 22, 2004 10:35 pm PST Link

Hi, folks...

In a recent RVator, I saw a writeup of some very clever auxilliary
fuel tanks made for (if I remember right) an RV-8. They consisted of
large-diameter aluminum tubing, just small enough to be slipped in to
the lightening holes in the wing ribs, capped on both ends. Would
such a tank be workable in the RV-10? Do the lightening holes in the
wing ribs line up? How big are they? Would this stress my wings in an
undesirable way? How about wingtip tanks a-la Cessna 310/340 (with
the possibility of removing them for ordinary flight duties)? What
are the winning Lotto numbers for next week?

The idea of an extra-long-range option on an RV-10 is certainly
appealing.

Oh crap, I just had an idea.

One solution to getting more range in an RV is to fly at a higher altitude.

Fuel flow goes down quicker than the true airspeed decreases.

A portable oxygen system is much easier to install than an auxiliary fuel
tank system.

You could "easily" build your own. I just took the factory tour and
looked inside the open wing on the model they were building. It is
possible - but you would have to design and build it yourself.

I've thought about this one and decided I wouldn't need extra fuel. The
current projection with the IO-540 is that you would have 1000 mile
range with 5 hours at 75% (200MPH). This is more than my rear can
handle - so extra fuel would just add weight.

Lance

The fuel tanks you speak of are manufactured by Hotel Whiskey
Aviation (HWA) and sold exclusively through SafeAir1.

HWA "ER Tanks" for the RV-4 and RV-6 are available today. ER Tanks
for the RV-7,8,& 9 are in development and all three should be
available soon.

We've had a lot of requests about ER Tanks for the RV-10. We think
think this makes a lot of sense because most of the time at least two
seats will be empty allowing you to carry more fuel and increase your
options and mission capability. The design and development of the
tanks has begun but HWA has not yet installed a set in an RV-10. HWA
is working with a couple of RV-10 builders who have offered their
wings to be used for final design and installation. With the large
volume of requests for these tanks, SafeAir1 hopes to offer ER Tanks
for the RV-10 sometime this summer. All of the ER Tanks are designed
for easy installation in completed aircraft, but it would certainly
be more convenient to do the installation while wing construction is
underway.

HWA builds their ER Tanks out of aircraft grade seamless aluminum
tubing and plate. ER Tanks will not introduced new fuel lines into
the passenger compartment and, when empty, the aircraft limitations
remain unchanged from the original design/construction. ER Tanks for
the RV-4 and RV-6 come in right around 10 lbs. for the entire system,
eliminating the need or desire to remove them for specific missions.
We don't expect the RV-10 tanks to weigh much more. HWA didn't
consider composite fuel tanks because of impact concerns (would they
shatter if you ground looped?) and their tendencies to build static
charges.

For more information on ER Tanks, go to www.SafeAir1.com

If you would like to be placed on our "interested parties list", send
an email request to ERTanks@S.... You will receive an email
newsletter about every 3 months with updates on the development and
availability of ER Tanks.

Thank you for your interest.
