List,

As usual, I am looking for better ways of doing things. Today we were
building up the wing spars. The spar cap is countersunk for a secondary #8
dimple of .032 skins. So one plugs in a 100-degree counter sink in a micro
stop and starts making shavings. If you do that your counter sinks will
chatter and holes will be stars and over the maximum of 7/32 because the
counter sunk hole becomes too deep for the pilot to guide the bit.

Solution to this is Drill a #24 hole in a scrap piece of 3/16 aluminum
bar stock, clamp this with quick grips to the back of the spar cap. This
gives your countersink pilot a hole to ride in while cutting the counter
sink. This is faster and the shaft of a 7/32 drill bit will just slide
through the hole.

Sincerely,

Noel Simmons
