I haven't heard much about the wing kits - just curious whether they
are living up to the same high standard that the empcone kit.

Also, I just finished up my elevators and my wings ship next week.
I'm trying to decide whether to press ahead and build the tailcone or
put it off until after the wings. For those that have already
completed the tailcone, how much time for that section?

Wings are fantastic. I have had them for 1 month and 2 days and have the
wings with top skin on and the leading edges done. Starting on the tanks
tomorrow. I finished all off the tailcone and I am glad I did. Now when I
take it to the hanger for final assembly it is all fit and ready. Randy

Also the wing kit is great. no problems what so ever, I'm also at the same place on the wings but just need to seal and install the back cover tomorrow and will be finished with the fuel tanks. What a mess!
Then off to the bottom wing skin, flaps and ailerons.

After I finished the elevators, I was seriously thinking of putting
the tail section aside and going straight to the wings. I ended up
doing the tailcone and have clecoed and drilled just about the entire
assembly in three evenings. I'm amazed how quickly it is going
together. I still have to take it all apart and debur, dimple and
rivet, but it's going much faster than I ever could have imagined. I
won't be putting the feathers on the tailcone for now because of
storage space. I'm debating with myself as to whether to back rivet
the empennage or just buck it.

I also have needed a lot more clecos than expected. I think I started
with about 400, borrowed another 300 and just barrowed another 150.
After match drilling, I've been spacing them every third hole or so
unless they need to be closer for bends, like on the top skins of the
empennage. The 250 1/8" clecos are about right but close at times.

Dan and others, how many have you needed? After drilling, how far are
you spacing them?

Overall, the kit is an absolute joy. I look forward to going out to
the hangar every night and on the weekends. As a first time builder,
I'm amazed to hear the stories from the earlier kit builders about
what they had to go through to build their kits. I also get a fair
amount of razzing as well. Something about not really being a builder
unless you've formed you own aluminum in the forges. Whatever.

Yeah, I know full well the stories of woe and horror! My -8 kit was in
another world compared to the -10 kit. Still, it was state-of-the-art for
it's day, with the skins prepunched! Oooooh! Nirvana! The skeletal
components weren't, so you had to jig everything, cut out a lot of parts
from raw stock, and interpret some drawings that you needed a engineering
degree to have any hopes of figuring out. Even then, the earlier builders
with no prepunched anything would scoff, giggle and throw rotten fruit at us
for whining about how rough we had it. As we all know, they had to mine
their own bauxite, forge their own steel, and walk five miles uphill
bothways in the snow to get to their workshops.

Ain't this RV building FUN?!?!!
