Hi all,
I just got going last night on my kit for the first real night of
construction. I gathered the parts for the first page of
instructions and went "DAMN!" Here I thought this kit was
going to be much more free of fabrication....what a way to
start. But then I tried not to be such a woosie and just figured
that it was probably just to break you in before starting. :)
Anyway, I wanted to document my project, much like Mike Howe's
page, only he does a hell of a lot better job than I probably
will. (see http://www.etigerrr.com/RV10HomePage.htm) So, I went
ahead and registered the domain "MyRV10.com". If you get in
a bind and need a place to post some pictures or files, just
let me know. I'd be happy to put some things up for you.
I'd also love to try to compile a list of some builder tips for
the new builder and post them here too, so if you know something
really useful, feel free to send it on and I can get it up there.
Thanks for all the help you guys gave picking out tools, now
I just have to get the building done.
Still considering a small bandsaw, and benchtop beltsander. If you
think I don't need them, let me know so I don't waste good RV10 cash
on them.

Hey Tim,
Jump in the sundowner and pop on down to Des Moines......I'll give
you a tour of the shop, a hot meal and even a beer or two. I can
show you what tools I'm using and how I've set up the shop....it
works really really well. ...to answer your question..you will need
a bandsaw...and I bought the Delta 4" belt with 6" disc sander and
use it all the time.....it's money well spent in my book.

That sounds just great! I did buy myself a 12" bandsaw and a 1"
wide desktop belt sander today. I figure if I need a 3" or 4" wide
belt, I'll stick my handheld belt sander in the vise. It's worked
before. I was able to get Vans to ship me a new VS-1014 today
overnight so that this weekend i can still keep working on my
V-Stab. Des Moines is only a short jump a way by sundowner, and
hardly a step for an RV!

With a little bit of notice we could probably arrange a small get-
together of -10 builders. There are at least 3 of us within a couple
driving hours of Des Moines.
Pete - you up for that?

Hi Bob,
You bet! I'll take all 'comers.....we've got a big house and can
take more than a few overnight guests if needed. I will probably
wait for the wings to come so there is something to 'do'. I'd hate
to have all that expertise jsut sitting around emptying my beer
fridge. On the other hand, I'm about to undertake the extension of
my baggage compartment....so some extra ideas might not be bad either.
I'll check with the boss and see what would work for her...then I'll
post a message with an 'open house' date. ...but any or all of you
are always free to just call me up, and show up too!
(keep the builders tips flowing----er...we could use some more from
you race horses out front!)
Cheers!
Pete

Out of the two, I use my combo belt-disk sander a LOT more, but the band
saw is sure handy to have around.

For the expense of a belt sander and band saw, I’d buy one, both can be had
for under $200 and will make cutting parts much easier.
I also used two 8 foot 2X4s and 2 4 inch piece of the top to the spar box
and made a handy tray on my table to clean the parts. Hang it over the end
of the table a little and put a pocket for the drain and when you are done
with the alum prep you can drain it easily into a plastic bucket with lid
and reuse it again. Took all of 5 minutes to make the tray, and used or
wasted 10 staples to put the plastic on it.
