Home -> RV-10 topic: Trim Tab Bend

Author: "Andrew Rayhill" <andrewtr30@...> Time: Mon Aug 2, 2004 5:38 pm PDT Link

I'm going to redo my trim tabs because I just don't like how they
came out.
Specifically, the 15 deg. bend in the bottom skin did not come out
consistent. The outer portion of the bend was crisper and better
defined than the center section, which was more like curved upward.
How did you guys do yours?

Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I managed to get through elevator construction with surprisingly
little grief - until I hit the trim tabs. I couldn't believe that
something so simple could be such a bugger. Trailing edge bends came
out fine. I managed to put some little dings in three of the ends
when bending those. I finally finished the fourth (final) end
perfectly, but when I removed the clamps noticed I had squashed the
trailing edge a bit! I was a bit shell shocked by the time I tried
the 15 degree bend on the lower skin. I ended up using a wood block
with a slit to the depth of the bent skin. It came out fine - you
may find this will remove your 'curve' and even out the bend. (I now
use this technique for all edge bends instead of Avery's edge bending
tool).

Like you, I thought of tossing them and starting again, but getting
replacement parts to Oz is a pain in the agates.

At the end of the day, I managed to smooth out the squashed trailing
edge (no filling required), the dents on the tab ends are barely
noticeable with a touch of primer, and the 15 degree bend on the
bottom skin (tho' not perfect) is certainly serviceable - and out of
sight:-).

Like all newby builders I like to take pride in my work, but I have
come to accept that I will make mistakes and not build the perfect
aeroplane. Now installed on the elevators, only a VERY critical eye
will notice any of the trim tab defects and I am really quite
delighted with how both elevators (and tabs) came out. Had I started
the tabs again, I'm sure I would have dropped the pneumatic squeezer
on the completed tab after the final rivet, or whetever else Murphy
could throw to conspire against perfection.

Now - onto the tailcone . . .

cheers,
Ron

I found that using the rivet gun per instructions didn't work out
well for me. I tried this on the first tab (inside one) and didn't
like it. Instead I used a wooden block and a big mallet. Came out
much better.

I used a 1x1 (I suppose that's the size) the length of the trim tab and
clamped it to the trim tab where the bend was to be formed. I then used a
block of wood around 6 inches long to hold on top of the leading edge and
hit with a nylon hammer. I just went back an forth a bunch of times and
just measured the bend as I went with angle measuring device (protractor
maybe, can't remember the nomenclature). The one side didn't come out
perfectly right in middle because the 1x1 I was using had a splinter
missing from around a 6" section of the corner of it. Not perfect there,
but I'm figuring the only reason the leading edge is bent is so that it
doesn't hang on the elevator. Doesn't look perfect to me, but it's 15
degrees and I'm doubting anyone who didn't know to look for it would notice.

Andrew,
I don't quite remember but I think I put the bottom skin faced down
against the table at an angle and pressed down on the trim tab.
Mine are not crisp but consistent throughout.

Form by hand, use a small wood block, work the bend along it's length until
it's right. Same goes for trailing edge..use hand seamer....work very
gradually full length to maintain even bend radius. Take your time.

Don't obsess over it.

Just BUILD THE PLANE.

Mine came out fine....But I did replace an elevator skin though because of that bend. James mentioned he used a hand break or in other words hand seamer but one made for A/C sheet metal work. It has a crisp instead of curved edge like my Clevealand seamer. I picked one up at Lowes. It is made by Wiss. The jaw width is 3.5" just a tad small but it worked great and I have a pretty nice edge on the tabs and skin. The wood block and gun method did not work well for me.

Hi Andrew,

I simply used a rubber mallet. I bent the angle on the spar of the trim tab
with it. Basically, I just used the spar that is there after everything was
set up and riveted to act as a brake. See it here

Good luck on the plane and have fun.I know I am!

The bends on my elevators came out perfect. Those on my trim tabs,
well somewhat less so... The method called out in the plans didn't
work worth beans (at least for me), so I too dropped back to the old
mallet and block.
