Hi all,
During rudder construction, I followed Tim Olsen and Mike Howe's
suggestion of a back rivet plate of angle iron, alternating the way
the rivets were set. I did not use proseal, but the edge came out
pretty darn good. However, I had to replace a number of improperly
set rivets and noticed that the pressure for the flush set had to be
turned up higher than usual to flush the rivet heads (shop and
manufactured). I think a number or rivets work hardened before they
properly set. Whenever too much pressure is used, you also run the
risk of denting the skin, even with a flush set.
On the elevators, I used the same angle iron/back rivet setup as
before but also used proseal. This time around, instead of using the
rivet gun with the back rivet set followd by flush set, I set all
rivets by hand. I used a hammer and standard bolt, with the top of
the head polished, to backrivet to almost skin level. I then
finished setting the rivet with a drift punch slightly smaller than
the skin dimple. Flipped the elevator over, and where needed, used
the flush set on the manufactured head (tho' I only need this on half
a dozen or so rivets.)
The process took a little longer than by using the gun, but only
marginally. Edge is straight as an arrow. Both the manufactured and
shop heads came out much better than using the gun, and I don't have
any dents or dings as a result of the gun not being perpendicular to
the skin.
cheers,
Ron
