Home -> RV-10 topic: Tailcone bulkhead fluting

Author: "mcgannron" <mcgannron@...> Time: Wed Aug 4, 2004 7:57 am PDT Link

Hi all,

I would be interested in knowing whether you needed to flute the
tailcone bulkhead halves. If so, where was the most effective place
to flute?

cheers,

I did flute mine, exactly where specified in the directions. It says to
heavily flute each bulkhead tab that had 2 holes in it.

See Step 3 on page 10-12.

I did not have to flute any down the sides at all. Just on the curved
upper part, when it's time to prepare for installing the top skins.

On the forward bulkheads, only as the manual dictates. At the aft end, had
to really do some flange shaping to get the skins to lay down properly
without any large gaps between the flanges and skin. It's all due to
tighter radius near the tie down ring and everything converging into a
smaller area.

You definitely need to heavily flute the top bulkheads on the sides. It
becomes very obvious once you put the top skin on. If the holes aren't
aligning they may need to be fluted more or less.

I learned a neat trick (the old timers probably know this) for getting the
flanges to lay down during riveting, especially the ones with only one rivet
hole. Obtain a plastic squeegee that is wedge shaped and drill #40 holes (or
what ever rivet size you need) in it so the holes are progressively deeper
as you go up the wedge. Put the rivet in the hole to be riveted. Pick the
hole in the wedge which when put over the tail of the rivet the rivet is
flush with the plastic, or real close. Now have the gun operator press as if
to rivet. While you press on the tail to buck you will see that the flange
gets pushed up against the skin by the plastic which is between the bucking
bar and flange. Have the gun operator give a burst and the plastic will keep
the skin and flange mated nicely and the rivet will set just enough to hold
them that way (the plastic gives slightly). Finally take the plastic off and
give another burst and set the rivet on down. It worked great the first try
(thanks PK!).

I've had the same issue with some rivets on those single tab bulkheads.
I'll give my method, and elaborate on his description.

These are those tabs on bulkheads, and ribs, where perhaps a tailcone
stiffner, or longeron goes next to. If the tab gets bent in, you won't
have the tab and the skin flush, so when you rivet, you'll have an open
gap. Not good.

My method is different, but his sounds to be easier to do right.
What I do is just hit it with 2 or 3 light bangs of the rivet gun,
just enough to expand the rivet the size of the hole in the tab.
THen, I have the bucker put the bar on the tab itself, not the
rivet, and I rivet it so the tab slides down the rivet flush with
the skin. Then I complete the rivet. Chris's method is nice
in that you're holding pressure on the tab with something.
You probably would want to oversize the hole in the wedge (could
probably use a plastic putty knife), so that you can hammer it
good and still get the thing off.

Later on when you rivet the tightly curved corners (I believe these
are the same places that are fluted) then skin will suck in a bit
and leave an inward facing dimple-like depression. One of the local
EAA advisors brought visited and had me tap the rivet a few times
from the inside using a 3/4" dowel. This popped the depressions
right out and the skin looks great.

Tim, This is exactly how I was able to get it myself and I was doing it
alone. *(where the bruises came from on the underarms) and it came out
great. The tabs almost need to helped so I just used the bucking bar to
accomplish it while riveting on the outside of the skin. It forced the
rivert through the hole nice and clean like where I would never had been
able to do it by pushing it physically with my fingers.
