Is anyone aware of a rectangular leading edge landing/taxi light kit
being developed for the RV-10?

Why would you want to cut into perfectly good wings when your
wingtips come ready for landing lights? Vans now even offers a dual
light kit for the RV-10 wingtips for $95-Both lights.

WOW, I didn't know they had that kit either. Its like you have to stay on
top of their site. Every time I go to their cart I spot a new option or
item. I plan to buy the option 6 Whelen package and now the landing/taxi
kit. That is a great addon. I was going to cut my wings too. I had no idea
that was an option until your post Mark. Thanks for the tip!

Speaking of lighting!!!! I just went and looked at the Whelen option 6
package I was going to order and I swear it was only 650 a couple of weeks
ago. Heck, the other day I was going to order it and got into something else
and didn't and it was like 650 or something! Am I seeing things or did the
price go up to 780.00 overnight. I swear it was 650 or 648 or something just
the other day?

Mark,
Have you looked at XeVision's HID lighting? They make stuff to fit all the
standard round holes. I'm looking at putting a standard round light in the
tip, but using their lighting for the guts. Let me know if you need a url.

Because the navigation lights in the tips interfere with the landing light
pattern. You get a much broader light pattern with the leading edge landing
lights. It lights the run way up much better in my opinion.
At this point I plan on putting leading edge lights on my -10.

I think Mike may have a point....I wish I knew for sure. We have
a 1977 Sundowner with a landing light in the wing. It's aimed
just fine yet when we switched the bulb to the Q4509 Halogen
that has a narrower beam, we were unimpressed and added a 2nd
light that is aimed slightly different to provide a more full
lighting pattern. So even if you can put a good amount
of light out in the tips, how is the quality?
I know myself that one way or another I will be putting HID lamps
in mine. I had been planning to do the creativeair HID's in
the tips, just because I heard they were coming, but originally
I had thought I'd do HID's in the wing leading edge.
What I really wish was that someone who actually has these tip
cutout lamps could profess as to the true honest quality of
the beam in relation to their position. If HID's in the
tips can be guaranteed to be of great quality and brightness
of beam, I'd love to do them....otherwise I'm all for cutting
my wings up to do the HID's in the wings. I don't fly
a tremendous amount of night flying, but enough that I want
to be able to count on my lighting 100% when I go into unfamiliar
places.
As for other lighting, I plan to go with tip and tail strobes,
and LED Nav and tail lights. I really like the idea of today's
LED's because if one dies, you can still have the rest function,
amd I like the IDEA of LED's and HID's because of the extreme
power load savings. If you're gonna run an all-electric plane,
when the charging system dies you're only going to have so
much power. Why not minimize load whe you can?

Makes good sense to me. The landing light in the tip is recessed since
the tip is notched. The beam will only be able to spread so far
at an angle inboard from the tip, before it's shaded by the edge of the
tip in front of it. Depending on the exact beam of the bulb, and how
it works with how far rearward the face that the bulb is put into, you
may or may not have much light directly in front of the plane. It's
very possible with the tip light setup that you'll only be able to
illuminate each lane on the sides of the centerline. By moving
the light source to the wing tip, and with good placement, you
should be able to put a lamp on each wing, and aim them both to
a center focal point maybe 500' down the runway, and have good
center lighting as you land.
It may also be that the tip lights, with good wide-beam lamps, could
work well. I haven't seen any of these tip lamps in operation. I
do know though, that if they didn't work at least as well as
leading edge mounted lamps, I'd probably want something else.

My 1951 Bonanza had 100W GE lamps ( non halogen) about 4-5 feet from the
cabin in each wing L.E. I think they came off farm tractors. I only needed
one lamp to land with, it just seemed like overkill to have both on, plus
they really pulled a lot of amps. The section cutout was not much bigger
than the bulb (bulb about 5 inches in Dia.) and it didn't seem to cause a
shadow to the other side of the plane. I felt like I could see out front and
to the sides just fine. I think 75 W halogen on the tips with a good pattern
will be plenty adequate.

Dave,
It looks like the XeVision Model XV-16-RP HID light might work with
the RV-10 wing tip installation kit supplied by Van. Would appreciate
your feed back on this.
I suppose another option (to avoid cutting a hole in the wing and
fabricating brackets, lenses, etc.) might be to modify the wing tip
to make room for the XeVision Model XV-23. I understand you can save
some bid bucks buying this light from Duckworks.
Thanks for your help.

OOPS -- XeVision's model XV-16-RP HID light is not suitable for
landing light. Now looking at their XV-19 to see if it will fit on
the wing tip.

There's a big difference among standard lamps for planes. My
Sundowner came with a single 4313 bulb. Can't remember all
the specs, but here's what I *think* I can pull out of my
long-term grey matter. 4313 was something like 25 deg. beam,
130,000 candle power, 250W. The 4509 bulb was about 1/2
the candle power, but only 100W, similar wide beam. The Q4509
(Halogen) is like 11 deg beam, 100W, 100,000 candles. So,
when we mounted 2 Q4509's, we thought we'd have better lighting.
Turns out that wasn't so. The 11 deg beam killed it.
That's my point. The 75W halogens in the tips may be ok, but
I'm looking for extrememly good lighting...to the tune of it's
worth $800 for me to have great lighting. The tip lighting
may or may not be as good as their leading edge lighting.
Wish I had more people with first hand info about both.
The Bonanza you're talking about I would think had EXCELLENT
lighting, of course. 4-5 feet is a GOOD distance from the
cabin, and it was on each wing. I think this would be nearly
ideal. It's not the same as what we're talking about though
with the tips. In those tips, the whole cutout is maybe 8"
wide, and it's recessed maybe 8" deep. Best case, you're
probably talking about putting a lamp within 4" of the
sidewall that is 8" in front of it. (guestimate). And this
is before anyone has actually given a spec as to the beam
width of the bulb. It may very well work.....but, I would
like some first-hand reports of this setup, or some hard specs
as to the beam info on the bulbs.
Not war-ing, just looking for specifics.

For those looking for facts on the Van's lighting kit, it contains
lights and hardware for both wing tips. Lights are MR16 type bulbs,
75w halogen with a 38 degree beam. These are the same type that you
see used in some track lighting. I think that I've also seen narrow
(~12 degree) beam available. FWIW, the kit also comes with templates
and hardware for mounting the standard Whelen nav/strobe light.

Correction to my earlier post - the lamp is a 15 degree spot and not
a 38 degree flood. Exact bulb type included in the Van's kit is:
12V75W EYF.

Anybody think of putting some landing lights in the very front of the
main landing gear wheelpants? I saw a Kitfox of all things with a
light in the front of each wheelpant - looked pretty sweet. Any
automotive-type light housing should be able to take the moisture,
etc. Just depends on the clearance in there, I guess . . .

Also, a correction to my previous post.
I dug up the info on the landing lights I mentioned that are in
certified planes.
Bulb Candels Beam W. Beam H. Lifetime Watts
4509 110,000 12 deg. 6 deg. 25 hrs 100W
4595 60,000 14 deg. 6 deg. 300 hrs
Q4509 140,000 7 deg. 7 deg. 100 hrs 100W
4313 140,000 12 deg 6 deg. 25 hrs 250W
By the beam widths, the 15 degree may be just fine mentioned
below. The wattage may be on the low side, but with the advent
of HIDS that fit those small holes, we may have what we'd need
to make it nice and bright. I'm still thinking of cutting my
wings and putting in Van's HIDS at $450 each though. Maybe
use the tip light kit as taxi lights, or additional landing
lighting.

Don't forget HIDs don't like to be flipped on and off, as in
a "flashing" landing light. So maybe a HID for landing mounted
somewhere, and two halogens in the tips for "flashing" and for
taxiing?
