Home -> RV-10 topic: EFIS gotchas

Just to show that the Grand Rapids unit has the same types of things
to work out when planning your panel....here is some info direct from
their website:

"The EFIS can not provide a VOR function for the CNX80."

"We will be adding the option of an internal GPS to the EFIS in the near
future (probably by the summer of 2004)."

"A similar interface for vertical steering (altitude) is also being
developed in conjunction with TruTrak." (Point is, it's not yet developed)

"The EFIS will be able to tune the SL40 Comm radio, and the SL30
Comm/Nav. This is accomplished via the RS-232 serial data bus. The EFIS
has 6 of these inputs and outputs, and thus there is no additional cost
to allow the EFIS to tune your radios for you. (The software for this
ability will be available by the summer of 2004.)" (Another feature not
yet developed)

"Possibly more significant, the EFIS can tune the VOR portion of the
SL30. This allows the EFIS to provide a VOR nav head (HSI) function.
Also, since the SL30 can be simultaneously tuned to two VORs at the same
time, software could (and probably will) be written that will calculate
a position based on VOR data that the EFIS can then use to cross-check
the GPS position. A cross-check can also be performed when only one VOR
station is available. With VOR data being monitored and cross-checked
against GPS data, and displayed on the EFIS, it would seem reasonable
and legal to fly VOR approaches using the GPS based moving map, without
the need for an non-precision approach approved GPS. We will be looking
into this more this winter. Persoanlly I like the idea of GPS data being
cross-checked with VOR data, as this reduces the pilots need to function
as an integrity monitor of his GPS. This is very nice when flying IFR
when descending below the height of obstacles. The possibilities with
SL30 are intriguing." (more undeveloped features)

"The interface between the EFIS and any of the TruTrak autopilots allows
the coupling of the autopilot in the following modes:
oGPS Flight Plan (autopilot flys the GPS flight plan)
oSelected Heading (autopilot flys the the selected heading.)
oVOR (autopilot flys the radial selected on the VOR, using VOR
data)*
oLOC/Glideslope (autopilot flys the localizer and glideslope)*
(I don't know what the asterisks are about, but it doesn't say that it
will fly a WAAS glideslope using GPS down an approach)

"The big advantage to the Garmin 430 is that it is certified for
non-precision approach, and eventually will be certified for precision
GPS approach, which will not be available in our EFIS with its internal
GPS option."
(Just have to be picky about what your requirements are)

I also didn't see any mention of Weather integration, like WX Worx.

So, nothing against the company, and I'm just as frustrated with the
shortcomings of EVERY other package that I've looked at for at least
one reason on each one. But, it goes to show that if you're really
going to try for the most flexible, readable, controllable, coordinated,
and full-functioned panel, you're going to have a lot of work to do
it pick the proper components.

Just for giggles, Here is a page I tossed together after OSH regarding
where I'm at with my panel planning. DOn't know where I want to mount
things, but there's 4 .jpgs with some guestimates.

Have you guys looked at the new Blue Mountain EFIS/Sport? I believe it has
a built in GPS and couples with the CNX80 as well...

Bill,

The problem (currently, Greg is hoping to have a fix soon) with BMA talking
to the CNX80 is that the CNX uses it's serial port to talk to the built in
SL30 receiver, so the BMA doesn't have access to it, and you have to use the
analog signals instead. That's true for either the Sport or the One. Greg
has been talking about building a board that'll get around that and be able
to drive it directly, but information is so far sketchy, as is the schedule.

I've been looking at the EFIS One + Sport + A/P, which looks pretty good.
Nice thing there is I have completely redundant PFD's, either of which can
drive the A/P. I figure I'll use the Sport for my engine display most of
the time, unless the One dies. Oh well, still many moons before I have to
commit.
