Hi Listers...
Well, I knew I should have sent that check to J.T.!!!! I just spent
three hours in traffic after waiting at Lowe's home improvement
buying cases of water, flashlights and batteries. Also stopping at
the grocery for canned food and all the hurricaine gear and some
propane for the grill. This is the first time in my 13 years in
Florida that the forecast says it is going to hit land in Pinellas
County within a couple of miles from my home! I am in Pinellas
county and a mile from the beach. I live on the west coast in the
area of Clearwater beach but a little south of there.
I was an hour late getting the kids and found them sitting in the
office. Cell stations are overloaded so there is absolutely no
getting out on the cell as all yyou get is network failure. I have
never witnessed a mandatory evacuation od my County before. They
called for all A, B, and C flood zone residents to leave. The
beaches are closing at midnight and no traffic in or out! If you are
staying your in for it. It is just a mess. All the main bridges are
backed up and there is almost no escaping and the hurrivcaine is
forecast to hit tomorrow (friday) in the morning.
I thought I would throw a hurricaine post onto the message forum as
I prepare my yard for the worst. Last time we had a remotely close
hurricane the winds where so bad that 2X4's where sticking into
telephone poles and coming out the other side. it was the weirdedst
thing I had ever seen! Its like steve martin with the arrow in his
head but not a fake arrow. I guess the poles swell so much from the
pressure that a flying 2X4 at 140 MPH will slide right through a
telephone pole if hit just right. Very odd thing to see! We are a
bit nervous but are on the highest point of the county where I live.
The new garage doors are hurricvaine rated up to 150 mph so getting
those installed last week might have been fate. I am glad I went
with the stronger insulated doors!
Ok, I am getting wordy, I will post once the worst is by us to
update what happens and that everything is ok. I am going to pick up
my inlaws in their zone C neighborhood in St Petersburg later
tonight and have them stay here. SSSSTRESSS! I hate this time of
year other than the blazing heat the weather is just so
unpredictable!
I know...I am making light of a major situation...it is nervous
energy! We pray every thing will be ok!!!

Hey James, if your kit is mostly destroyed, but your right elevator
comes out ok, I'll give you $50 for it. Mine has a little ding,
and it would save me time rebuilding it down the road...

James,
I can't believe I turned down a business trip to Clearwater, FL. Oh
well, I'lll be sure to take them up on it next time, and I'm
optimistic that your stuff will be there. Now tonadoes I don't care
too much for. Had one that came close to my house that year -
lifted a few shingles on the neighbor's and broke a window or two a
few houses down the street but left mine untouched. I've seen miles
of oak trees as wide as 3-4ft across laying flat looking like crop
circles. The twisting motion of tornadoes can do some damage.
Hope the best for you...

Yeah, no kiddin! Already read a report of crumpled light aircraft at an
airport down there. No doubt will be a deluge of pranged air parts on the
web pretty soon. That's how I got the engine for my RV8...from a storm
totalled Sundowner in Florida.
Re: backriveting tailcone....Roger Wilco! I was able to backrivet most of
the sides and chose to front rivet the bottom and rear end around the last
two bulkheads. Just goes to show there isn't just one way to do it. You
can use some ingenuity to do what works best. Gotta love these prepunched
marvels. The -8 fuse had to be riveted conventionally while locked down in
the jig. Bucker dude had to worm around between bulkheads and jig formers to
get it done.

Hi All
First off, thanks for the caring thoughts.this is truly some serious stuff.
Well, it's over. The storm knocked power out for a lot of people. We do feel
spared. My wife says it is the prayers from her prayer candles that turned
the storm just before it made land in the mouth of Tampa bay. She literally
had about 50 of her prayer candles going yesterday all day and her and the
kids prayed all morning while I was out here.. I mean this thing was bearing
down and bang, it turned north east! It was such a blessing. Lakeland,
Orlando Sarasota,(Which is my flight path into Runway 36 at Albert Whitted
was slammed hard. The parachute jump area over Lakeland and Zephyrhills was
absolutely slammed millions in losses. Planes creamed and cut in half. I am
worried that my new airline pilot friend Bob who is wanting to build as 10
may not have been as blessed as us yesterday. He is in Ocala. Bob normally
flies 4 to 5 days a week on international Caribbean runs and his wife and
kids are at home. I am going to try him on the phone in a little bit. I
assume he has a nice home and hopefully it was Miami Dade updated from
Hurricane Andrew which really smacked folks a few years ago. Brian is right,
the airport was demolished!!!!!! Aircraft and loss of life! The folks had no
warning it would turn. We where prepared, everything was put away but they
weren't as the news said it was heading for Tampa bay's mouth near the
skyway bridge! (the bridge that separates our county with manatee and
Sarasota counties)
I am watching the news in the shop while I type this and it says that one
guy died in Ft Myers when he stepped out of his house to have a smoke and a
tree landing on him. Very sad! They where just not prepared. All the people
in the mobile homes that where told the storm would hit Tampa Bay and then
it turned right into them. One guy said on the news that tall his neighbors
where home riding out the storm. The anchor man then said after he walked
away "well, you just have wonder where these people are? Pretty sad!
I appreciate all the thoughts. I will be cleaning up for a while today as it
is a bit of a mess with stuff everywhere but we appreciate everyone's
prayers! Happy to be safe. Many are very unlucky this morning..There are a
boat load of engines coming up on trade a plane soon! The airport made it to
the newspaper this morning. Every plane tied down (remember the storm was
not projected to head the way it did so no one moved their planes) is not
cut in half or upside down. Millions of dollars in aircraft gone. I saw an
RV3 or 4's on the news that had the tip up canopy cut in half!
Your friend
James McClow and family.

Don't know if James posted to the list yet and it's still awaiting
moderation, or if this is the first, but...
I did get an email from him this a.m. and it looks like that last-minute
turn of the storm just cleard them. They didn't take the center
head-on, but caught just past the core of it. He didn't mention
any damages to the family or kit, but I can't imagine there wouldn't
be at least something that happened to the house or yard...that was one
heck of a storm.
So anyway, it sounds like they made it, but I'll let him post the
details.

GREAT to hear you're OK! Scary stuff indeed. Here in New Mexico we're
usually spared the worst of Mother Nature's pranks. Good thing. I was very
near a tornado while in Mississippi during a movie shoot. Out in the open,
nothing but a truck trailer to hide under. Never felt more naked in my
life. Positively eerie sound it made.

Hi all,
Am glad James and family are safe. It sure is a shame about the planes being
demolished by the hurricane, but my thoughts are with all the families and
folks who were not so lucky.
The strange thing is although I don't know James I was kinda worried for
both him and his family, I suppose its because I have been following his
build progress with interest and didn't want the info to stop heheh (yup
selfish - keep up the good work James). The internet sure brings people
closer together.

It was in the 80's, the miniseries "North and South". Spent a week on a
huge farm as a battlefield reenactor filming the battle of Churubusco. We
burned a LOT of black powder that week. Storm blew through and soaked
everything...guns, horses, costumes, sets, what a mess! Still, in true
hollywood fashion, the show must go on...and it did! Patrick Swayze was a
cool cat. Naturally, he's an airplane owner. :)
