Home -> RV-10 topic: Small discrepency for routing wires

Author: Tim Olson <tim@...> Time: Sun Aug 15, 2004 10:54 pm PDT Link

I noticed on page 14-4 a small issue with running wires through the
ribs.

Step 2 says: "Enlarge the wire run pilot hole .....<snip> "(this will
make a small notch in the W-1029C Angle, which is acceptable.) Install
an SB625-7 Snap Bushing."

The catch is, the holes that are existing for routing the wires
aren't exactly the same as the drawing in Figure 2, that would match
that description.

The tooling holes for the pitot line come out great. The other
tooling holes that get enlarged for the wire run are all in a nice row,
except for that furthest inboard rib. That one has a tooling hole
in line with the rest, and one slightly higher and rearward.
If you follow the directions and let the drill make a small notch in the
angle, you're drilling a hole that isn't in line with the rest of the
tooling holes in the other ribs. If you drill into the other tooling
hole, you're no longer slightly notching the angle aluminum, but
drilling into your bellcrank bracket. That more forward hole (that's
in line with the rest), is almost touching the bracket.

So, the short of it is, you really either can't using the existing
row of holes, and have to come up with a completely new run, or
you'll have to zig-zag those wires a tad through that inboard rib.

Normally, the zig-zag wouldn't be any issue at all. But, for me,
I've decided to use that blue Home Depot (Menards, up here) conduit
for the run. I don't think flexing it to line up through the other
hole is worth it, so I'll end up putting the snap bushing in the
inboard rib and running the conduit down the rest.

Does this jibe with what y'all others are finding who've drilled their
holes?

Made good progress this weekend. Kind of stinks though that I got
to this point unprepared. I didn't have conduit on hand, and I
haven't purchased an AOA gauge (don't know for sure that I will).
Haven't bought the autopilot either. So, I don't really have
any wires that I could run if I wanted to, and I don't have any
idea which wires come with A) The wiring kit with the finishing
kit, and B) The autopilot. So, I just have to throw in the
conduit and maybe not finish off the bottom skins until I get
the cash to throw at those parts. I had hoped to complete the
entire airframe and wait until I was almost done with the airframe
and then buy the engine and avionics all in one shot. Don't know
how that'll go together now.

Anyway, just wanted to point out that tooling hole thing, and see
what comments it brings. Maybe some of you have the tooling holes
in both places down each rib...that would fix the issue.

Tim,
Just finished closing my bottom skins today - 62hrs. After worrying
to death and made sure I had all the wires installed before closing
the bottom skins, I found all the worrying were not neccessary. Of
course I used the provided snap bushings. You can reach every snap
bushing/rib through the 3 access panels. If you insist using
conduit, well... waiting until later maybe best.
