Anyone have any reservations about putting a (relatively) unprotected
stobe flash tube in the wingtip? Is that enough protection from
temperatures and moisture?

I have had my unprotected strobes in my wingtips for over two years now,
have flown in light rain a couple times, and have had no problems...

FWIW my 20 year old Glasair 1 has unprotected strobes, and
they still work... :-)

The position/strobe lights have been hanging out in the breeze on my
Citabria since 1980 and they are still working.
I'm thinking about mounting the position/strobe lights in the wing
cutout and cutting a hole in the front of the wing tip for the
landing/taxi lights. Really don't like the position light/strobe
blocking the landing/taxi light and the small (weak) light Van is
selling. Not to mention ability (or lack thereof) to get the right
angle on the landing/taxi light since its behind the position/strobe
light.
If I mess it up wing tips are cheaper and less expensive than a
leading edge skin.

My landing lights are EXACTLY like Van's (they even used the exact same bulb
as me), except I have been selling mine for over two years now...
...and if you install my LED Nav lights, and my strobes, the landing lights
are not obstructed...
