Home -> RV-10 topic: Alodine

Author: "Patrick Seipel" <seipel@...> Time: Thu Aug 19, 2004 6:43 pm PDT Link

Group,

Having dealt with the fact that buying Alodine via mail order subjects one
to extreme hazmat shipping charges, I searched the lists for an alternative.
Over on the Matronics list I read a post from a gentleman who was buying
Alodine 1200S, a powder form of the Alodine 1201 that is often used. The
key here is that 1 lb of the powder will make 10-15 gallons of Alodine, so
you've (hopefully) saved on the hazmat shipping charges. The hard part is
finding a distributor interested in selling it to an individual.

I've about got Aircraft Spruce convinced to offer it for sale on their
website, but they're asking me how well I think it would sell? Is there
anyone else out there who would be interested in buying the powdered form
and mixing it themselves? The anticipated price would be a 1 lb package for
$20. I think that's a great deal, but please give me some feedback so I
don't give them bum scoop.

Thanks,
PJ Seipel

I'm getting ready to buy alodine again, and spent a couple of hours or
more this week trying to find a source for the powder in smaller
quantities, like 2 to 5 lbs. If Spruce would sell 1lb for $20, I'd
be ordering from them immediately.

Folks,

One can get the stuff form Eldorado Chemical. They have several places
around the USA. One note, I bought a one gallon can of the powered alodine
and it went bad, so I now own yet another. It will make a gazzion gallons,
however, my understanding that the powder that remains in the can (read the
data sheet) is good for about 6 months of shelf life. (Not good.)

Also, EC has another product called "Astromat". It it very thick and is
usually watered down when you need to use it. It smells like orange oil
and ammonia. This stuff woks like nothing else when it comes time to wash
oily/greasy items, like the belly of your spam can. I use it with one of
those cleaning guns and shop air. Also, a good old rag and some elbow
grease work wonders, too. Supposedly, American Airlines buys the stuff by
the truck load in 55 gallon drums.

Hope this helps.

I'd buy it in a minute. My father who lives in Atlanta and visits me in NC
every few months is my Hazmat transporter, he has gone down to Spruce East
to pick it up a few days before heading up here. But I'd surely mix the
powder if I had a source.

Mr Jim Irwin, President of Aircraft Spruce confirmed to me yesterday
that they are in the process of setting up part numbers for 1 lb and 5
lb bags of alodine powder. He anticipates they will have it in stock
in 3-4 weeks. I'll post a heads up when he lets me know that it's
ready for sale.

For anyone in the Chicago area, Terrace Supply

along with anything else you might need for automotive type

To be honest, I'm not sure. I can't imagine that it would be higher
than for the liquid though. For the last gallon of alodine I bought,
I paid $15 for the alodine and $27 for shipping. The way I figure it,
would you rather pay $30 shipping for 1 gallon, or $30 shipping for
enough powder to make 15 gallons?

Ideally, everyone would be able to find a local supplier and avoid
shipping altogether. I searched for 3 weeks, couldn't find anyone
local, and couldn't find a distributor who wanted to sell to me in a
small enough quantity.
