Out at our fly-in community (8T8) we have a fellow pilot who purchased a
new Maule. It has the high compression pistons in it, so it's rated for
only 100LL. He installed an STC that allowed him to de-tune the engine for
the use of autogas. To satisfy those who ask why...he has a remote ranch
and it's easier to transport and store autogas vs. 100LL. So, are you
willing to spend the bucks on a high horsepower engine to de-rate the
thing? Does this make sense?
Now addressing the question of a turbine. As you know, we opted for the
turbine. The first issue (for us) is low maintenance. Face it, no other
aircraft engine has lower maintenance (that equates to operating
costs). The lower operating costs will pay for the increase in the
acquisition cost. With 5000 TBO (and looking for 10,000) it doesn't take a
rocket scientist to figure out that the difference will be made up
quickly. Additionally, if one were to part with their baby, the fact that
there their probably will be a lot of time remaining on the engine will
benefit the new owner. A good selling point.
Fuel burn. That is our big concern. We're PROMISED somewhere around 6-7
GPH per 100 HP. They are expecting less, but not promising this. Also,
Jet-A is not going away. I'm sure everyone read there is no more 80 octane
being produced.
Concern...NEW to the market. Like the Deltahwak (I like this too) the
Innodyn is not a "PROVEN" powerplant. My father's neighbor (Dick Sipp) is
building a ten and does not like anything that is not fully proven. He has
a point.
Watch the market for an announcement in the 540 series of engines. There
are serious rumors out there. If I didn't have an engine, I would wait a
little while longer to see if the rumors do indeed come true. If the news
comes true (and I understand that is should), there will be a lot of happy
ten owners out there.

David,
Don't keep us in suspense. What's in the rumor mill regarding the IO-
540? Even a hint?

Please,
What rumours??? Let us all know what`s in the works? Even if its
speculation, I`d like to hear what might be coming down the pike.
