Home -> RV-10 topic: Turbine fuel burn

Author: "eric_panning" <eric_panning@...> Time: Mon Aug 23, 2004 6:30 pm PDT Link

6-7 gal per hr for 100 HP is a BSFC of 0.42 to 0.49. This is a
similar BSFC to a lycoming. Since Jet-A is heavier you would have a
savings per gallon. Diesel is ~ 0.38 for 100 HP or roughly 5.42
gal/hr

Does Innodyn have data from their test platform for fuel
consumption? Some key points are idle, 50, 75 and 100% power. In
the past, they have anticipated some unloading of the compressor at
altitude + higher delta T due to lower intake temps. How long have
they been flying their flight prototype? I thought it has been close
to a year now and I have not seen any real numbers from the
platform. Not that that is anything new in the powerplant world!

There seems to be a battle going on at the innodyn newsgroup. I'm
glad that it has not carried over here. We should all be so lucky
that we have the luxury to debate engines and not plans, part
quality, hole locations, alignment, etc. Van's has done an amazing
job on the kit.... :)

Eric

> Fuel burn. That is our big concern. We're PROMISED somewhere
around 6-7
> GPH per 100 HP. They are expecting less, but not promising
this.

Has anyone heard or seen any data or speculation on what to expect
for performance on the innodyn turbines in an rv-10. I looked up
their website and it looks interesting but what are the specs?

This just in from Innodyn:

So, soon we will all know. Also, they have at least one (but I think two)
RV-10 kit(s) they are building as I write this. They have very aggressive
goals in getting a ten flying with their 255 HP engine.

Keep the Faith!

It all looks interesting but they will not come out with actual performance
figures. I was very interested at one time but now am going Deltahawk
diesel.

Innodyn has this info on their website:

"Innodyn has been conducting test cell research on the Turbine since
1997. The company has been flying an RV-4 with an Innodyn Turbine
since 2002. In July 2004, along with Rivers Aeronautical, we've begun
flight testing on the RV-6AT. We will have an additional test
aircraft operational in the next several weeks."

My concern is, if they have been flying since 2002 why don't they
have numbers for cruise speed, climb rate and fuel consumption???
They have been flying the RV-6AT since June/July 2004 and I have not
seen any info on this platform either....

Has anyone seen published or unpubublished performance numbers for
either of the flying platforms? Perhaps they are only sending data to
customers?

Yep, hit the nail on the head. I was amazed at the people ready to buy this
engine or already have, with out looking at the numbers..............cause
there are none! I honestly hope the people who have bought one of the
turbines, at least, get the HP they are promised.

Sounds like it may be a loooong time before we get any figures. Surely they would have an idea with the 6A!!
