Home -> RV-10 topic: Fuselage Delivery - A Horror Sight

Author: "dejavuan2" <wvu@...> Time: Tue Aug 24, 2004 3:40 am PDT Link

My fuselage was delivered today through Best Way - horrified
experience.
First the driver did not want to back the truck down my 350'
driveway. Then I found out that he had poked a 2ft hole on the top
of the truck from hitting a low-hanging branch of a tree. He was not
in the best of mood. He finally backed the truck right to the
garage, openned the back of this 45' trailer. Nothing was inside
except for the crate I've been waiting to see - it couldn't be my
crate.... When he pulled it closer to the back I said: Don't do a
thing. Let me get my camera.

It was hard to believe this thing was a crate at one time. I
thought hurricane Andrew had somehow found it while on the way here
in MD. The entire bottom of the crate was pushed inside and upward
about 8 inches. The top of the entire crate was also pushed inside
and downward. None of the 4 sides were attached to one another.
They were held together by merely by two metal bands - one length-
wise and the other cross-wise. I could only imagine what the
contents looked like. BTW, I could see that a metal bar had
slipped through one of the corners and was half hanging outside of
the box. It turned out to be the rudder pedals. Some powder
coating was scraped off but still haven't unpacked the whole thing
yet.

At this point I can only see the composite V/S fairing was cracked.
All AL sheets are intact. The cabin top appeared to be ok.
Winshield is ok. The way the fuse is packed is that you have all Al
sheets at the bottom of the crate, then the cabin top itself packed
upside down. Then all subkits individually wrapped and put inside
of the upside down cabin top. Tubings were tied to the sides with
strings. What I believe protected the contents was actually the
cabin top. It prevented the crate top and bottom from crushing
everything else inside. The frame of the crate itself appeared
somewhat flimsey as I found no wood larger than 1X6 along the
edges. Others have receive similar crates fine so it must've been
the trucking companies.

I have called Best Way. They were apologetic and reassured me that
I'm covered and not to worry. Will report again after inventory.

I too just received my wing and fuse kits. Few of the plywood stapled
seams were tight any longer, but not as bad as yours. The wing kit
however had a tine hole in the end of the box and mangled a few of the
skins (right where the $ was spray painted on the end). However the
replacement skins from the emp. cone that were damaged in the emp. cone
crate arrived fine inside the fuse crate : )
