Home -> RV-10 topic: More on the fuel burn

Author: David Talley <dtalley1@...> Time: Sat Aug 28, 2004 5:32 am PDT Link

I contacted Innordyn and they said that getting into the fives was probably
not gonna happen. I did hear at OSH possibly look for the high fives,
however, that probably will not happen.

We just started turbine engine theory at the A&P school I'm
attending. They said they BIG ultra high by-pass turofans are achieving
somewhere around 97-98% efficiency and that they are actually still making
strides towards more (never say 100%).

Sorry for the confusion on the fuel burn. I'm gonna ask about what they
actually do every 20 degrees of rotation (other than "make corrections").

Have fun building this weekend!

we're mixing apples and oranges....."efficiency" in turbofans refers to the
conversion of power into thrust, not fuel burn

FADEC is old hat in turbines....it's size that counts

best BSFC in turbines are the gargantuan $20 million (each!) GE90 engines on
the 777...they achieve .384 lb/lb/hr (which is equivalent to around .42
lb/hp/hr) at max rated power of 90,000 lbs thrust at sea level.....these engines
(like all aviation turbines) are optimized for very specific power curves and
operating conditions (altitude).

single stage turbines (i.e. APUs, Innodyn, etc.) are notoriously fuel hungry,
usually in the .75 - 1.0 BSFC range

Turbines have VERY predictable characteristics:
The smaller the turbine, the worse the SFC
The lower the altitude, the worse the SFC
The fewer the compressor stages, the worse the SFC

GE and PW spend "b"illions to get .010 improvement in BSFC, i.e. from .44 to
.43....

is there a pattern here?

Hey Dave,

Ignore that stuff about "speed tape", "paper clip safetying" and "foil fuses" in your A & P class...wouldn't want to use those repair systems on your RV-10. JUST KIDDING...I know there are good A & P's out there working on GA aircraft, somewhere.... To all A&P's lurking....I'm poking fun of course....But we have stories!!!!
