Home -> RV-10 topic: RV-10 takeoff/landing ground roll?

Author: "amanaheatingac" <waynegillispie@...> Time: Mon Aug 30, 2004 12:21 pm PDT Link

I am planning on building a kit in the near future. I have A&P but
no pilot license yet. I only have room on my property for about an
800' grass strip. Would the RV-10 be a good "first airplane" and
would it be capable of taking off and landing on this short of
strip? I know the numbers on Van's site says it can, but I would
assume that is for a paved runway. I may either have to build a
Zenith CH701/801 or buy property with longer grass strip. Thank you
for the information! Wayne.

Someone asked this same question at OSH at the RV-10 forum. The
answer that popped into my mind was the same as the one Van
gave. With a grass strip, and giving yourself some leeway for
performance and climb over obstacles, You'd want probably
no less than 2000'. I know that if I had only 800' of room,
the only thing I'd consider is a slow bush plane or something,
like that Zenith CH701/801.

That said, I think that while having your own strip could be cool,
I'm sure glad I just own a hanger at the airport so that I
don't have to mow the grass, worry about mud, plow the snow,
worry about runway lighting, and all the other things that go
along with both grass and self-owning.

Wayne,

You could get in & out an 800' strip but (as you will find out in your flight training) what kind of obstacles do you have to clear at either end and how tall are they? That will be the deciding factor for the use of that strip. Even with the STOL capabilities of the Zenith you will need to gain some real good short take off and landing skills prior to using it as your primary field. I would opt for the new property but then I'm kinda fond of the RV-10.

A question asked of me many times in an earlier life when I used to instruct in, and sell ultralights. The answer:

For a highly skilled pilot, executing perfect technique, in ideal circumstances - Yes. For all others, get plenty of practice with a mile of concrete in front of you. Then, after a couple of hundred successful takeoffs and landings, you'll know for yourself what you're capable of.

Of course, weight, power, propeller, density altitude, winds, runway obstructions, runway slope, etc. etc. etc. also factor in.

800' is not going to be enough, especially if it's grass and wet or
frosty. Landing/takeoff distances are actual "until-it-happens"
distances, not recommended field lengths. At normal landing speed
you'll be covering 90-100' per second, so a one-second error on
landing on an 800' strip will use one eighth of the runway. Two
seconds will use a quarter. Can you control the airplane to that
degree of accuracy every time? Not to mention wind gusts, etc.

I'd like to have 12-1400' for an RV-10 on grass. Sure, it will get
in and out of less, if everything goes perfectly, but in airplanes we
live on margins. The closer we cut them, the more metal gets bent
and blood spilled.

Th CH701/801 are nice planes. You would likely have the 701 built
quick (600 Hrs?) and it is designed for short fields, rough
conditions. Maintaining a field of any length in good condition
would not be easy. I expect by the time you add drainage, grading,
etc the costs will be high. The CH701/801 you could get away with a
rough field but not a RV-10 with wheel fairings...

One test is to drive a car along your landing spot at
approach/landing speeds. I expect what looks pretty flat is not!

By the way, CH701 landing roll is less that 100 feet....

Sir Wayne,

Someone asked Van what the shortest runway that he would suggest for
a -10 during the Oshkosh Forum meeting. His reply was 2000 feet,
if I remember correctly. One of his team members suggested 2500
feet. In the end the final suggestion was to just get a Rotorway
Exec!

Short runways are just not a good thing!

I flew my C-35 Bonanza (225 HP, 2700lb gross) easily off of carpet like grass. 2600 ft with real 50ft. obstacles. No problem, but I probably would no go below 2000 ft. Why have to wonder all the time, especially on high density alt. days.

How to land really short, or is it worth it. Almost anyone can land an
airplane in 800 feet or less, actually, almost any type of aircraft will do
that. The challenge is to be able to walk away from it. Now that is a
little trickier. Buy a different piece of property and you then can host
flyins. I have a piece of property that is not quite long enough, and I'm
looking for a bigger piece.

I would feel relatively comfortable with 1200 to 1500 feet, but I've got
thousands of hours PIC and a lot landings. Shorter makes me nervous, and I
hate being nervous.

The other piece of really good advise is make a short drive to an airport
and open the hanger doors, pull your clean plane out of it, and fly off.
Let someone else mow the grass, pay the insurance, and worry about the
length. Just fly and have fun. I say this and I am looking to develop an
airport community on a piece of property, but I'm looking for 3000 foot
runway, no trees to go over, and orientated so that wind prevailing is down
the runway. I figure lots to be in the 2 to 5 acre size, with CC & Rs on
colors and size.

First things first, build the plane, fly it well and then work in slowly to
experience.

Yes I do remember KC-97, hated taking gas from them but loved the gas.

Sometimes I fly over Newport, RI, where they've got two mothballed
aircraft carriers. I figure with wind from the right direction, I
could drop the C-172 down and land on the deck. Maybe I'll save that
for my last flight when I'm 95 and about to lose my medical.

I would feel relatively comfortable with 1200 to 1500 feet, but I've got

The other piece of really good advise is make a short drive to an
airport
and open the hanger doors, pull your clean plane out of it, and fly off.
Let someone else mow the grass, pay the insurance, and worry about the
length. Just fly and have fun. I say this and I am looking to develop
an
airport community on a piece of property, but I'm looking for 3000 foot
runway, no trees to go over, and orientated so that wind prevailing is

First things first, build the plane, fly it well and then work in slowly

Wayne,

You could get in & out an 800' strip but (as you will find out in your
flight training) what kind of obstacles do you have to clear at either
end
and how tall are they? That will be the deciding factor for the use of
that
strip. Even with the STOL capabilities of the Zenith you will need to
gain
some real good short take off and landing skills prior to using it as
your
primary field. I would opt for the new property but then I'm kinda fond
of
the RV-10.

assume that is for a paved runway. I may either have to build a
Zenith CH701/801 or buy property with longer grass strip. Thank you

I have done it on the MS Flight simulator....It is quite a challenge. I would not want to try it for real with the arresting gear strung out. A few years ago we deployed to beautiful Wendover Nevada with the F-16, set up the BAK on the departure end and this guy in a Varieze failed to get the NOTAM and totally wiped out his gear when he ran over the cable...He was a little upset to say the least....

In the 60's the Corp made multiple landings on the Forrestal with a stock KC-130. No hook was needed. If memory serves me they got that a/c stopped in less than 400 feet. For all you guys out there thinking about turbine power the hook is optional. Without prop reverse I'd stick to Van's numbers.

The 172 idea...good one. I've been saving the St. Louis Arch for my "retirement".

I don't know what the fuss is all about...the US Navy lands and takes
off in 800 feet all the time...and they do it over water at night and in
bad weather!! :)

How to land really short, or is it worth it. Almost anyone can land an
airplane in 800 feet or less, actually, almost any type of aircraft will
do
that. The challenge is to be able to walk away from it. Now that is a
little trickier. Buy a different piece of property and you then can
host
flyins. I have a piece of property that is not quite long enough, and
I'm
looking for a bigger piece.

I would feel relatively comfortable with 1200 to 1500 feet, but I've got
thousands of hours PIC and a lot landings. Shorter makes me nervous,
and I
hate being nervous.

The other piece of really good advise is make a short drive to an
airport
and open the hanger doors, pull your clean plane out of it, and fly off.
Let someone else mow the grass, pay the insurance, and worry about the
length. Just fly and have fun. I say this and I am looking to develop
an
airport community on a piece of property, but I'm looking for 3000 foot
runway, no trees to go over, and orientated so that wind prevailing is
down
the runway. I figure lots to be in the 2 to 5 acre size, with CC & Rs
on
colors and size.

First things first, build the plane, fly it well and then work in slowly
to
experience.

Yes I do remember KC-97, hated taking gas from them but loved the gas.

I would opt for the new property but then I'm kinda fond
of
the RV-10.

Wayne.
