Folks,
Thank you to those that share their mistakes. As you know, we'll be
ordering our kit early next year. So any and all "mistakes" made sure
would be nice to read about. There's nothing like "learning from other's
mistakes". I hereby solemnly promise to publicly write up the ones that I
make, so others can learn. THANKS..
Onto personal stuff: I spoke with the (hangar) builder (and RV-10 almost
builder) and we're about to break ground on a friend's hangar. Yes a
friend's. His allowed us to add to the building so we can have an 18 by 30
shop on the side. His hangar will be 44 wide by 72 feet deep. This space
is there for us to use. He has a Tri-Pacer so there should be abundant
space for a couple of tens in there! Oh, did I mention, we help build the
place and get free rent?
We currently own our own hangar at the same airpark, however, it's stuffed
full with two Stinsons (a his and her's). One flying, one in boxes. Oh,
one other thing...my wife has been absolutely adamant that I get no new
projects until the boxed Stinson is flying. She flew the ten at OSH and
well, I believe its called a "woman's prerogative". Anyone else out there
seen this phenomenon?
Thanks again. We are really looking forward to ordering the kit.

Since people aren't confessing mistakes I'll get the ball rolling.
;^) Last nights mistake was having my bucking bar under the skin in a
tight corner between a rib and spar on the elevators, bucking an
AN470. Everything felt right, but when I pulled the rivet gun away I saw
that my 470 manufactured head was sunk around half way into the skin: the
bucking bar wasn't on the rivet! That's what happens in tight spots (for
me anyway) where you can't really see what your bucking bar is on. Anywho,
I put the bar *on* the rivet the next time and continued on to see how it
would go. It actually pushed the rivet back out, although you can still
see the imprint of the rivet set around it.
There, I feel better now. :^)

Hey Everyone,
Anyone ever laid in bed at night and called themselves every word they can think of for "STUPID" after working on their project a few hours before?
Dings, accidental dimples and general screw ups happen and hope that it is not structural but parts is cheap in comparison. I own and extra right upper elevator skin due to an altercation with that @##$$% trim tab bend .....Just look at all the other groups and history repeats itself on each one. Look up close at other aircraft. Unless the person has gone the extra mile to fill every nick, ding or dent you can see the same things we all are experiencing. RV's I have looked at are like trees with the rings telling a story......the Empennage parts have little dings, the wings might have a few but the quality of the build is better, not sure how but it looks better. By the time you get to the Fuselage it appears perfect, no dings, rivets set perfectly etc etc. You can see how the builder skills improved as they progressed. Someone posted (sorry forgot who) that they seem to mess up once every 12 hours. I thought it was funny to make a statistic out of it but it seemed to be pretty
close. One thing I can say, and has worked well for me is to read the plans until you only have to confirm hole or bolt size or hardware specifics while mocking up the assembly. When you are riveting alone (after having a bucker I can say it is way better to use two people) push that bucking bar on the rivet and watch it pop up before placing the gun on the head....It is easy to mistake a cleco for a rivet, I even tap the bar against the rivet to make sure the GUN is on the right rivet....take your time. Cleco stuff together, they are easier to remove than rivets....I usually leave big stuff clecoed together overnight and then give it a really good look over before breaking out the drill the next day. Highlight the plans for those important steps. An finally since I was almost about to pull a McClow, Brian Denk said it perfectly "You got to get your head in the game" If your tired, unsure, not having fun or any other reason that might lead you to err, STOP!!! It will be there
tomorrow, everyone I have talked too that has completed their project has said that they did not finish anywhere near the date they thought, completion dates seem to make people rush to try and meet those dates. Right Tim? "OSH 05"
Oh yeah!!! I almost forgot...post your queston to our group...someone has already been there I'm sure and can help you out. Then tell us what you messed up so we can make fun of you. Unless of course you sell A/C units over the internet then we will make fun of you AND your posts. :)

Well, I'm sure *I* ... *NEVER* ... make mistakes. :) Actually, I've
sucessfully been able to be disappointed by at least one spot on every
section I've completed. The mistakes are getting to be very small,
unlike my rudder skin incident, but they still happen. These days,
my biggest "oops's" come from not having enough hands. Unlike some
people born near polluted rivers, I was only born with 2, and I'm
finding it hard to both buck and shoot the rivet at the same time.
The other day I gave up in grief and told my wife to get out and
help me finish riveting the ribs to the spars. My policy is to
never drill out a rivet more than once, and after drilling out
maybe 6 rivets....out of 25, I finally called "uncle" and begged for
help. With her there, we did the remaining rivets in both spars
with maybe 1 that got drilled out.
I may have said "OSH 05", but that's both wishful thinking, and
uncertainty about how much the QB fuselage will save. If I keep
building as slow as the past couple weeks, I'll finish by Osh '08.
If I keep into it like a few weeks ago, it may be in '05. My goals
are more centered around the seasons. I want to finish sometime
in the > 45 degree F time of the year next year. Don't really care
if it's by OSH or after....just don't want to see my plane in the
garage over another winter.
Like everyone says, just keep you head in the game, read ahead
on the plans, and do your best to just build the plane....but,
when all else fails, buy parts. :)

I have an extra hole on the V/S skin while dimpling. Somehow the
dimple die managed to escape the hole which I meant to dimple. Seems
to have happened before if you search the archive. I haven't done
anything to fix it just yet. My EAA counselor assures me that it's
not a big deal.
Another big ding I have is on the under side of one elevator. I had
hid it in a corner right after being finished with it, standing on
edge, so that I don't accidentally knock it over. Well, my wife had
to look for something in that corner and knocked it over for me. It
landed on the scrap aluminum sheets that Van's sent in the kit, also
sitting on their edges. Poked a nice hole in it.
Others are minor and has to do with handling the rivet set/bucking
bars and such...

Great tip, I forgot I had tried that!!
I did use it on a stray hole I dimpled on the tip of the VS, since the hole was at the tip just outside the last rivet and resting on the edge of the spar I didn't feel it would be a threat to the integrity of the structure. He is right though, the JB weld filled it up nice and you almost can't see the repair. I would not use too much as it is a bit heavy??? heck it is only a little hole...getting anal...must stop, back to work.

every 12 hours. I thought it was funny to make a statistic out of it but it
seemed to be pretty
close. One thing I can say, and has worked well for me is to read the
plans until you only have to confirm hole or bolt size or hardware specifics
while mocking up the assembly. When you are riveting alone (after having a
bucker I can say it is way better to use two people) push that bucking bar
on the rivet and watch it pop up before placing the gun on the head....It is
easy to mistake a cleco for a rivet, I even tap the bar against the rivet to
make sure the GUN is on the right rivet....take your time. Cleco stuff
together, they are easier to remove than rivets....I usually leave big stuff
clecoed together overnight and then give it a really good look over before
breaking out the drill the next day. Highlight the plans for those important
steps. An finally since I was almost about to pull a McClow, Brian Denk said
it perfectly "You got to get your head in the game" If your tired, unsure,
not having fun or any other reason that might lead you to err, STOP!!! It
will be there
tomorrow, everyone I have talked too that has completed their project has
said that they did not finish anywhere near the date they thought,
completion dates seem to make people rush to try and meet those dates. Right
Tim? "OSH 05"
Oh yeah!!! I almost forgot...post your queston to our group...someone has
already been there I'm sure and can help you out. Then tell us what you
messed up so we can make fun of you. Unless of course you sell A/C units
over the internet then we will make fun of you AND your posts. :)

;^) Last nights mistake was having my bucking bar under the skin in a
tight corner between a rib and spar on the elevators, bucking an

OK, I will join the crowd too!
You know the overlapped ends of the trim tabs. Well I managed to
finsh one and notice the overlap was wrong. The top side of the
trim skin was inside. I decided to just leave it, but a couple of
days later, my conscience insisted that I drill out enough rivets to
fix it. Took about an hour and I didn't manage to screw it up.
Now the ends overlap correctly and I sleep MUCH better.
I still don't know how I missed it during the first assembly.
Don't think it will be my last either.

Looks like it's my turn now...
I have one of those accidental extra dimples on one fuel tanks along
one of the rib lines. It is close enough to the flange that I didn't
have to make a patch like what's used on the end ribs. I drilled it
out a bit to make sure that there weren't going to be any cracking
issues and then was generous with the proseal along that seam. I'll
use some sort of filler on the exterior at some point.
There - now I feel better!

Richard,
(BTW we Richards have to proud this year since we are on the hurricane name list!!)
I would defend James all the way and in no way meant to do otherwise. I never looked that close at any other peoples photos unless I'm stumped myself. His site has helped me several times and I really had to study the photo to try and see what William was refering to. When James and I were starting on our kits he was having trouble getting the VS skeleton to line up. We talked on the phone and came to the conclusion that the flanges on the ribs were reversed...hence the term "Flanges up James" which we refer to on occasion. We chat frequently and would hate to think I offended anyone with my post.
James, Tim O., Bob K., Brain D. and many others have been here trading thoughts and tips since we began our kits...I forget that some folks are new and may not know our banter is purely fun.

Rick your not offending me.I am not new either, nor I'm building yet. Since our name is on the hurricane list, I hope it doesn't hit Florida. If it does there will not be a Florida, since it roll in like a bull in a china cabinet.
I wonder, when James's camera will be on line.

Hey Richard,
We are a bit worried about the new storm. It is twice the size of the
Charley and heading right for the east coast directly across from us. They
have cancelled school for the kids and Florida power and light is planning
nuclear power plant shutdowns/slowdowns. The actually kill the power before
the storm does. Since Florida is merely a 90 mile wide state we are in
trouble with this one I think. We will all pray that is it not another
Andrew. That would dig a hole all the way across the peninsula. It is
looking to flow right over us as the hurricane enters the state. Scary
stuff! Florida has had a stroke of crappy luck lately. Charley really hurt a
lot of people who have lost everything. It is a shame!
As far as the bracket I am not too worried about it since it does line up
perfectly on both sides and back of bulk head. I looked it over after my
walk through when I first noticed it. I will say I didn’t notice it until
the entire cone was finished though which I am sure similar things happen to
all at some point in one form or another. This seems to be the one place on
the emp that the bracket could be up or down (sure, preferably up and who
knows how I set it upside down) since I have bucked every rivet on this
plane myself so far so I have gotten pretty good at feeling my way around.
Like most of us. I have just about mastered bucking rivets now that I have
done probably 5000 of them. The holes are straight through the middle of
the bracket so I got lucky (this time) so up or down it makes no difference.
I noticed it after I did my tail cone walk through and posted it in my logs.
( A SUGGESTION) I have made a practice of walking the finished components to
make sure everything is where it is supposed to be after completing a
portion of the kit. I feel that when flying I will always no when there is a
creek or a shudder that everything is tight and safe, I reviewed every bolt,
rivet and rod. I have sabotage lock on every screw as well to make sure they
do not move. I am very picky about this. I have sent for a few parts since
starting because I am so cautious.
Typos, grammar…I save that for work hours. I just like enjoying myself and
building my plane. I don’t mind being known as the book writer or typo
master. People type how they speak and act. I am hyper and animated. Email
and forums make it hard for people to interact to far. It is limited and
occasionally comes off sounding wrong when someone is thinking they are
typing one thing and the other doesn’t understand and it seems like a flame
or negative post. Additionally, like most pilots and aviation folks…we are
all type A. You have to be to want to jump in a plane and fly upside down
: ) and heck, to get anywhere in life. Rick and the guys are all extended
family at this point. Jay B. Brian, Jim, Bob, Randy, Mike oh heck all the
guys lean on each other. I have learned a ton having met these folks on the
forums in February. I still remember my fist post like the ones I read from
time to time introducing myself as a new frat member. Funny story, the night
I first spoke with Rick I was heading to pick up ribs from this place in St
Petersburg Florida that makes the best ribs and I was having a problem with
my ribs and flanges with a knuckle head move I pulled. When setting the top
of the VS I set the top rib upside down. Like the bracket.) Oh man, its
becoming a trend now that I read what I typed). I had it upside down and
couldn’t cleco the three top holes. It was stupid move and where the term
‘flanges up’ that some may have read on my site/logs. We all mess around and
email offline occasionally and chat on the cams and just plain feed off each
other.
Thanks for the post. I love adding the photos to the gallery and am glad
people view them and like them. My plan is to use them all for my FAA logs
which I have printer friendly page set for every log page so I can add them
to my binder. I also love all the emails I get from folks from all over the
world and the chats on the cam. It’s fun. I look forward to having the kids
over with their families some day and showing my grandkids the pictures of
their parents (my kids) imagine how cool it will be to show them 10 years
later. This is what life’s all about! We are all very lucky people. I never
would have thought I would ever be afforded the opportunity to own a
airplane let alone ever fly one. We are all lucky! Sure, it takes a ton of
time to keep it up to date with my daily updates but that is one of my
flaws, Once I set my mind on doing something I do it whatever it takes !
See ya!

Hi,
I wanted to mention the am is live again. I didn't even realize the ip
address changed. That's the problem with DSL and using a port to allow
people in. Occasionally it changes so you think the cam is working and it is
not. It is back up. I am glad you mentioned that. I wouldn't have noticed
until I tried it or tested it. It actually looks like it is working on my
local machine so I do not typically try the preview visitor view.
http://www.mcclowsrv10.com/ezwebcam21.htm and if the cam doesn't start
automatically simply click the light yellow box towards the bottom of the
page to initiate the plug in upload so you can pan and tilt the camera from
your machine.
See ya!

Not yet. With the storm hitting the east coast we will not get the storm
surge but many people have left. We will know more in the morning. The bad
part of it is the size is almost the size of the entire state. It is a lot
larger than Charley was and that was 17 miles wide. This one is 40 something
moles wide. Pretty scary stuff. We are in one of the highest points in our
area but it still wont stop the debris from causing problems. I /we cant
believe we are being hit by two major hurricanes in 3 weeks time. It is very
odd for that to happen. The last direct hit for Tampa bay was in like 1890
or something. Maybe it was 1870. I am not sure but we are due.
I will update tomorrow

Good luck with the storm - are you in one of the areas to be
evacuated?
