Home -> RV-10 topic: Fuel tank vent lines

I cut my tank vent lines to 63" like the plans said and came up short
on one side due to the orientation of the outboard bracket (the one on
the fueling collar). If you rivet the bracket the way the plans show,
you end up short. Guess it would have been good to measure twice, cut
once.

In addition, no where in the plans did it say how large a hole to
drill in the bracket. Worse yet, the plans show a plastic grommet
fitting in the bracket. Drilling the hole to a size to acommodate the
grommet leaves *very* little metal left to support the vent tubing
through years of vibration and abuse.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate finding out about stuff like this the
hard way. After parts are already riveted and covered in sealant it's
tough to fix. Anyone else have the same experience or are you just
keeping the warts to yourselves?

I'll probably end up covering the hole works in proseal and calling it
good...

I didn't have the same experience you had. I cut mine to the length per
directions and they came out ok. I think that both brackets on each
wing are supposed to be oriented so the tab hanging down is toward the
inboard portion of the wing. I did mine that way and they had plenty of
extra tube.

You're definitely correct about them not mentioning the drilling of
the hole for the snap bushing. I had to look back at the plans and
get the hole size used on other parts with that bushing. In the end,
I used a unibit the same as usual, and as long as you drill well,
you'll have enough metal that I think it would stay in place just fine.
If I'd have known in advance though, I'd probably have just cut my own
bracket a little bigger from some scrap and drilled my own holes.
There's nothing special about that part. I agree, it would be nice to
know what you're getting into before you've got the proseal on your
gloves.

The same sort of thing happened to me with the flaps yesterday.....

I started building the attach brackets and special nose ribs following
the plans. Then suddenly I was at the point where you build the
skeleton and final drill to the spar. Now I had to figure out which
parts go where. It wasn't too awful complicated, but not everything is
labeled....like the inner and outer rod end nose ribs. In fact, I
can't even remember seeing a label that says which end of the flap is
the inner or outer. That made it tough, except knowing it was the LEFT
flap I was building, I just had to imagine the flap on the plane and
figure the parts out that way. All in all, if I'd have known what
I knew after I assembled the skeleton, I'd have spent lots less time
labeling and identifying the flap attach brackets while prepping them.

For you with that vent tube though, I agree, proseal the sucker up.
Also, rebending that vent tube where it zig-zags may give you a little
more length.
