Hello All,
I just wanted to take up a bit of bandwidth to introduce myself to the
group. My name is Jeff Carpenter, and I'm builder #304. About seven
years ago, I completed the tail of an RV-6, bought and started the
wings when I decided to remarry. Two kids later I began to think about
getting back to the project when I discovered all the improvements Van
has made in the kits... and that I could get two more seats! Fool me
once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
So, hear I am, about 26 hours in (including unpacking the crate and the
inventory) and just about to button up the VS. I own a commercial
printing business in Altadena, California and the project sits in the
shop just outside my office. I call it the carrot in front of the
donkey. If I'm caught up on all my work, I get to work on the plane.
So far, I'm getting two to three hours in each day, with no sacrifice
of family time.
I've been following the list for the last few months, and feel as if I
know a number of you already. I've filed away a lot of good
information for future reference. If there are any other 10 builders
in the area, I'd certainly enjoy getting together.

Hi Jeff, glad to hear you're joining the RV-10 crowd. Those of us with
kids definitely know why you chose this kit. Just a quick reply to
your intro so that I could correct your quote below...

I think you're looking for that quote from G.W.:
"Fool me once, shame on—shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled
again."—Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002
A spectacular orator... (yeah right) ;)

Hello all,
Seems like there is a lot of introduction lately, and that's good!
I'll be lurking for a while. I'm getting a couple of things paid
off and sold while I gather tools and prep to order the tail kit.
I'm an Army and private pilot. Been looking for 4 years now for an
airplane to build. After drooling over the Exec 162F, I'd settled
on the CH640 until I sat in the back seat and found there really
wasn't one. Anyone want a rudder for it?
I want the experience of building, but I want an airplane now, like
we all do. I'm going to trade off a little on both ends and go for
the full quick build. For the rest of the build I plan to take my
time, and while I build I can keep my aviating appetite satisfied
with helicopters and higher airplane ratings, partially courtesy of
the G.I. Bill.
I know that in my quest for knowledge on building, I'll get plenty
of help ont he metal construction. How do I get up to speed on what
wiring to use where, what skins to leave open, tips on plumbing (air
and liquid), and all the others issues that a kit manufacturer may
not have as much interest in helping the builder? The small
pamphlet I got from Van's didn't address much of this. Do they have
a more complete info packet I can get, or are they just that good
that all I have to buy is "the fluid for the lines"?
Anybody install or use the full Blue Mountain EFIS yet?
Thanks for your ears and fingers that keep me informed,
Rob Wright

Welcome to the group! You might want to postpone the decision to go
full quick build until after getting into the tailcone kit. You will
find that the kit in general is very advanced and that you might not
mind trading the quick build money for other goodies down the road.
I will say that it got old dimpling and deburring all of the wing kit
related stuff, but it wasn't that bad. Sealing the fuel tanks isn't
as bad as you might imagine from all of the proseal talk. But, if
you go quick build you'll be save a bunch of time and the only
downsides are extra money and wait time.
As for more info on things electric, the best resource on the web is
the Aeroelectic list www.matronics.com/listbrowse/aeroelectric-
list/index.html. In addition to being a major contributor to the
list, Bob N. also has his own web site at www.aeroelectric.com where
there's a lot of reference and tutorial info.
Other useful places for RV related info and general construction tips
are Matt Dralle's RV lists at http://www.matronics.com/listbrowse,
Doug Reeves' website http://65.219.228.161/index.htm, and the
VansAirForce Yahoo Group at groups.yahoo.com/group/vansairforce.
Also, Dan Checkoway's website at www.rvproject.com is a tremendous
resource.
That should give you plenty of reading material!

Welcome Rob,
I have a rudder for a 601, maybe we can make something out of them!! Van's instructions to date have addressed all of my questions regarding plumbing, at least on the wings. If you follow the group you will find more info comes to light everyday. Look into the web sites not only for the -10 but the -7,-8, & -9's. The -10 is really a bigger version and the wiring and plumbing is very similar. Take it one step at a time and you will be amazed at how much you will learn. Spend a few bucks on the Van's practice kit and you will get a feel for drilling, deburring and riveting before tackling the VS, which is the first part you will build on the -10. Everyone here will be there to help you over the bumps...which if I had time I could list for you but I have to get back to drilling my wing skins. :)
