Home -> RV-10 topic: How to torque AN fittings for fuel vent line

Author: "PJ" <seipel@...> Time: Mon Dec 6, 2004 5:08 pm PST Link

How does one adapt a torque wrench to torque the AN fittings for the
fuel vent line properly? Van's says to make sure and get the proper
torque, but how?

Thanks,
PJ

Hey PJ,

I'm just a lurker, not a builder, so I may be off here, but I think
you need to use a crows foot.

I'm pretty sure this is the formula you need to calculate the correct
adjusted torque wrench setting.

"X=T(A/A+B) -- where X is the adjusted torque reading on the torque
wrench, T is the desired torque applied to the fastener, A is the
length of the torque wrench from the center of the handle to the
center of the torque shaft, and B is the distance between the center
of the torque wrench shaft and the center of the crow's foot. The
torque applied at the fastener is greater at the fastener than what
is read on the torque wrench when any extension is used."

What I'm not quite sure of is if it makes a difference how the torque
wrench is positioned relative to the crows foot. Hopefully these
crude pictures might help visualize what I'm describing. Again, I
DON'T think it makes a difference (can someone else please confirm?),
it is just rotational force applied using a lever arm.

-Jim

Situation (1). The torch wrench is 90* out of alignment from the
line defined by the nut and the crow's foot. BTW, N stands for nut
and C stand for center of the torch wrench.

Situation (2). The torque wrench is parallel with the line defined
by the nut and the crow's foot.

P.S. Or, you can simply use the German torquing rules and make
it "GUUUT-EN-TITE" and move on <g> :-)

Use the appropriately sized "Crows Foot" attached to the drive end
of your calibrated torque wrench. Snap On makes some exceptional
high quality ones and they are always being auctioned on Ebay as
used. Only a few sizes are needed to meet the oil and fuel lines.

Does this fitting really have to be torqued? I spoke to Vans regarding
the vent line and was told to get it snug... No mention of a torque value.

The vent line fittings may not be all that important, but later on
when doing fuel and oil lines, I figure it might be more important.

Torque Values are dependent on the fitting material: Steel v.
Aluminum and then their AN size. The official table is found in the
43.13-1B (For Certified Aircraft) on Page 9-19 in Table 9-2. That
table is usually a question when obtaining an A&P rating. As an
Experimental Builder you probably already know about the need to
apply certified standards.... not. Its at yours or Van's descretion.

I had a friend who almost lost himself and hiss Experimental
Nanchang CJ-6 over a check valve issue on the vent lines so I'll
hold my opinion on those not being important.

If torque value is so important on the vent line then why didn't Vans
point that out in the plans? I'm pretty sure that there are *lots* of
completed RV kits out there that haven't fallin out of the sky... So
what torque values did prior RV's require on this fitting? Mine is now
"snug" and covered in proseal to boot.

So what is the torque value for all the aluminum fuel lines and
brake lines?
