Home -> RV-10 topic: Marking torqued bolts

Author: "jimcinlexky" <JimC@...> Time: Tue Dec 7, 2004 12:11 am PST Link

I am looking for a method or material to "mark" a torqued bolt.

Is finger nail polish ok to use or is there a better way to mark a
bolt? Preferrably a bright color that will make apparent any
rotation of the bolt of nut?

Also what about using any of the "Thread Locking" materials on bolts?
Good or not so good?

Thanks,
Jim C

Hey Jim,

What you're looking for is called "Torque Seal". I had a cousin pick
me up some from an electronics store. I also ended up buying a couple
of tubes from Avery while at OSH. It's that colored paint, that cracks
off when a bolt has been rotated. Comes in bright colors. Perfect
for what you want to do. As for thread locker, I wouldn't use it
except in specific cases. Places where I would never disassemble
the part. You wouldn't want to use it in nutplates for instance. I
don't think I'd bother using it though unless it was specified....
probably not really needed.

I use a product called "Torque Seal" , I get mine from Aero Sport Power but it is available from Avery and others, it comes in small tubes. I have found that you should knead it a bit before opening.
