Things you should consider if you are going to use an AOA as a stall warning
or when purchasing an AOA.:
1. Does it provide you with an audible warning? Chances are if you get in
trouble and expect it to give you a warning you will not be looking at the
display.
2. Does it just beep in the headset or does it give you a verbal command?
"Angle Angle Push"
3. Does the AOA give you an accurate reading when in a slip?
4. Is it a true Full Range AOA Instrument (Flaps Up or Down)? AOA settings
will be different when the flaps are used.
5. Does it display Optimum Approach AOA?
6. Does it display Best Engine Out Glide AOA?
7. Does it display Best Angle of Climb AOA?
8. Will it privide you with a backup instrument for landing if you loose
your airspeed indicator ?
I have had my AOA Pro for over three years in my RV-4, I liked it so much I
bought the company, really I did.

Advanced Flight Systems, Inc. is pleased to announce the acquisition of the
line of angle-of-attack instruments from Proprietary Software Systems, Inc.
The product line includes both the AOA Pro and AOA Sport models. AFS
currently manufactures and markets the popular ACS2002 computerized engine monitor
system. This addition strengthens Advanced Flight Systems' already strong
position in the avionics market.
Company President, Rob Hickman indicates "This acquisition represents an
exciting expansion of the Advanced Flight Systems product line. We are committed
to expanding our aviation products offering and feel the AOA line makes an
excellent expansion category. Mr. Frantz has created a truly best-in-class
system that fits our goal of always providing state-of-the-art products, solid
value, and superlative support. We are in this business for the long run and
our customers will see a continuing stream of improvements to both our current
products, and new products."
Angle-of-Attack indication unlocks Navy carrier pilots’ secrets and puts a
priority on safety. All approaches should be flown at the same optimum
approach angle-of-attack not the same IAS. General aviation pilots can now do
precision approaches just like the military and airline pilots and accurately
gauge Vx, Vy, best glide, L/D max and maximum endurance AOA because
angle-of-attack is not a function of weight, bank angle, fuel load, density altitude ,etc.
This patented revolutionary angle-of-attack instrument is based on a long
known aerodynamic principle. The AOA includes a color display and aural voice
system which warns of critically high AOA, gear position errors and
installation/hardware errors. There are no ugly probes, vanes or protrusions to slow
you down or accumulate ice.
Currently in the process of relocating AOA production to its facility in
Portland, Oregon, AFS looks forward to a smooth transition that should be
complete by January 2005.

Rob,
Since I am going to use your (now yours) AOA system, what is your feeling about installing the vane and horn as well. I as well as others have been programmed to react to the horn. Initially I was going to do both but conversations here lately have started me thinking that the old reliable vane and horn are not needed because now I'll just have to get used to "angle angle push" BTW, I still have the option of ordering in two phases right? Wing ports and hardware first followed by the indicator and computer in about 6 months?

RIck,
On my RV-10 I am not going to install the stall warning from Van's. I just
hate having to cut a slot in the front of the wing and have some flapper
sticking out to get cought on your shirt.
Prices and ordering the kits in two phases is still the same.
We are going to offer a $250 rebate to anyone that orders an Engine monitor
and AOA Pro together.

Subject: [RV10] Re: Installing Stall Warning or Not & AOA?

I received my AOA and noticed that it comes with a "stick" to
release water condensation. I haven't looked at the video yet but
this caught my attention. Being from Minnesota, I thought that this
might be a problem with dropping temps and then freezing. I have
not seen or heard mention any discussion on moisture with the
sensors or the openings. Would you care to comment or has anyone had
any experience with the ports.

Dave,
There are two pressure taps - one on the top and one on the bottom of
the leading edge section. The top pressure tap has a
small "resevoir" with a drain fitting on the bottom. The holes for
the pressure tap are actually very small and folks that I've talked
to haven't ever actually seen any water come out.
I will say though that it looks like frost (or ice, snow, etc) could
easily block the top pressure tap.

Dave,
Here is a link to an RV-6 site that shows a few good photos of the install. Basically it is a fuel drain that you can open to drain any moisture from the ports. You might want to inquire directly. I think Rob monitors the group and he would be able to give more detailed information. I have talked to several people who have them installed and moisture was never mentioned as a factor. You got an hour or so of building before you'll need the hardware to install in the wings... ;)

The ports are designed to be located at 15% - 40% of chord. In flight icing
and bug contamination will start on the leading edge and work its way back.
It is my understanding that if you get icing as far back as 7% you are in
trouble and if you get ice as far back as 15% you are in really BIG TROUBLE and
you will be returning to earth shortly.
The upper port needs to be protected and checked before flight if there is
any chance it can get plugged.
I have never had water in my RV-4 upper ports in 3 years even after I wash
the plane.
Here is a similar question and answer that I got last week:
>I have an AOA pro that I'm installing on a Lancair IVP.
I'm putting TKS on the wings.
I'm wondering if the AOA is going to function with glycol flowing over
the ports. Any idea?<
It should work but nobody that I know of has tried this.
My preference would be to locate the ports far enough aft so that the
glycol was evaporated before it got to the wing ports. You might try to get some
information from TKS regarding how far they would expect the glycol to migrate
aft along the wing. I think you might be surprised to find that it is
designed to be a leading edge (about 7% or so of the chord) issue only.
Our guideline is to locate the wing ports at 15% to 40% chord to be well aft
of leading edge contaminates bugs, ice and including glycol.
Let us know what you discouver and any experience when you get flying.
Even if the glycol covers the ports, so long as it is a thin layer the
pressure should be transmitted.
