Home -> RV-10 topic: Torgue Tube / Wing Rib Question

Author: "jimcinlexky" <JimC@...> Time: Wed Dec 8, 2004 7:33 pm PST Link

Does anyone have a picture of the assembly created on Page 14-2,
step 8, figure 5 of the Wing kit? This is the attachment of the
aileron torgue tube support attached to the root wing rib.

I have attached W-1029B-L, W-1029C to the wing rib (W-1010-R).
There is a lightening hole with a raised portion just behind the
torgue tube support on the rib. It is close enough that when the
0.063 spacer and W-1029A-L are put together, They sit up on the
raised portion of the lightening hole. I have a picture on:

www.infra-read.com/Wing/DCP_1282.JPG

www.infra-read.com/Wing/DCP_1283.JPG

Does anyone have a picture that shows a close-up of the assembly and
it's position relative to the lightening hole between it and the
main spar?

Something I have done is just not right.

Thanks, Jim Combs

Hey Jim,

At your service. Just ran out and snapped these for you:

http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/closeups

Should show you what the completed item looks like.

I don't see your tooling hole that I see on mine. You can
see my spar on some pics, so you can tell where it all is in
relation to the spar side of the rib.

Let me know what you find when you compare...

Jim,

I had the same issue, it seems to be OK but the bottom does rest snugly on the top of the lightening hole. My best guess as to why this happens is the holes are just a tad closer to the edge of the brackets than they should be. My fix was to polish off just enough to allow the bracket to fit as flush as possible, it riveted up just fine to the rib and I only took off the smallest amount that was touching the raised portion of the rib, but no I don't think you did anything wrong, the best fit I had was after it was riveted, especially the top flanges that fit under the rib flange, I had to fight to get them to line up but after the entire assembly was riveted they were very close to being inline.

Tim,

Yours are very close to the lightening hole as well. When I put
clecos in the rib flanges top and bottom, the 1029C part is already
against the raised portion of the lightening hole. The only way to
put the whole A,B,C assembly in place is to carefully trim about 1/8"
off the most forward plate (1029A). I will check with Vans today.

Not a bit deal, I was just wondering if anyone else ran into this.
The tolerances are just real tight.

I hate to force this in place.

Yours looks like it just barely fits.

Nice work, Thanks for the pictures.

I recall this spot well... I trimmed the plate to fit and only had
issues getting the *last* rivet. The plans state to rivet the control
piece (forget the exact name but it's the rotating thing) first. I did
that, but it meant that there was very little clearance to rivet the
1029c hole directly behind.

What fun...

I called Vans and talked to Bruce.

He offered up this solution:

Get out a plastic hammer and flatten the portion of the lightening
hole flange that is in the way. It is already supported by the angle.

The parts are so nicely done I hesitate to do that, but it is a good
solution.

I asked about trimming off a small portion of the bracket. He said
that would be OK as long as the distance from the rivets to the edge
was greater than (2 x Rivet Diameter) ==> 3/16". The holes are
already pretty close to the edge. I will look tonight.

My preference is to trim a little, but flattening out the rib flange
is ok too. Either way, I am back to work.

Thanks for the pictures and the information.

Jim,

Mine just barely fits as well, it fit better after I riveted it, just like Tim's...Also look at the forward flange of that rib when you get ready to rivet it to the spar....the plans call for 5 rivets and there are actually 6....anyone care to guess how many time a grown man can count six holes in an evening and try and figure out how to get to 5 just cause the plans say so? :)

Now somebody please tell me they had six holes as well so I know I didn't add an extra hole at some point during the drilling of the spars.

Dave,

I just cut my holes for Van's conduit...13/16" is the magic number, the only down side is I had to pickup another unibit from Lowes that went up to one inch....I now have a spare 3/4" if anyone needs it. 3/4" was just a too small to easily fit the conduit. If you Las Vegas builders (Bob & John) need to drill a hole this size save your money and give me a call.

Now I'm gonna have to go home and look real close....so that I hopefully
have the chance to poke some fun at ya. Look at this picture:

http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/closeups/PC080731.html

If you look at the rivet spacing, you'll see that there are 3 visible
rivets.....the other 2 are hiden behind my nutplates and clamps.
If I'm right, then I only have 5 rivets in mine...per PLANS. ;)

In the background, you can see the 3 bolts that secure the fuel tank
z brackets to the spar, so the spacing of those holes is similar
to the rivets.

You know, if you're gonna drill extra holes in your spars and ribs
for lightening holes, don't just go fillin' them with rivets. ;)

Jim,

I had the identical problem, exacerbated by the lightening hole not
being punched sqarely. Advice from Vans is consistent. " . . . Not
elegant, but smash the hole stiffener flat with a platic mallet . . ."

Solution worked fine for me.

cheers,

As usual, I was wrong. I looked at my rib and there are 6 rivets on
that inner rib to flange connection, and 2 bolts.
The picture I had shows too many reflections to be able to see it from
the picture. Dang you Rick, can't I ever win over you! :)

Well, I trimmed just one side and things fit MUCH better. That
flange in the web should (IMHO) be moved or made just slightly
smaller so the intererance isn't possble.

Tim, Your work / pictures look great! No need to poke any fun.

I am finally getting close to assembling this for the last time.

Thanks, again for the help and pictures!
