I ordered my AP servos from TruTrak today and ended up in a conversation
with them about my panel. Here's a quick page I threw together
that you may want to peek at. A great new option as a backup
or primary gauge.... Better than the Pictoral Pilot.

Tim,
I really like the 2.25" as a backup but I think I will go with the 3.125" and use it to replace the turn and bank and backup ADI plus it has the precision to be used IFR, what more could you ask for? And no vacuum to worry about either, if the quality holds true like all the other products from TruTrack it seems you can't go wrong. I'm sure it will be priced fairly too. I have added it to my wish list. Does an electronic DG precess like a mechanical one? or does that get me the dumb questions of the week award?
Also do you have a material list or drawing for your wing stand?...I'm almost there now with the skins getting ready to deburr and dimple, won't be long before I'll need to store them.

That looks great. Does it get it's digital direction indication from an
external source or does it use it's internal gyro?
This would be even better if they integrated their AP with it. :)

I agree with all you say. I'd be looking for the 3.125" for readablity.
The guy I spoke with actually in general referred to this as being the
best PRIMARY, not backup. He's not into EFIS, as the vertical tape
indicators are hard to read....and if you toss out the truly unnecessary
items in an EFIS, you're not left with much. (While I think I plan to
install an EFIS, I honestly agree with him....I'd be just as comfortable
today with all round gauges for Horizon, DG, ASI, VSI, and NAV) The
nice thing with an EFIS is you get all the info consolidated. The down
side is all your data is consolidated. :) For me, I had planned to go
with an EFIS, and a complete panel of redundant standard gauges....and
doing this kinda makes the EFIS a waste. Blue Mountains 3D Horizon was
impressive....but this guy reminded me that for IFR ops, terrain doesn't
matter that much. He was VERY pro-map unit...like a Garmin GNS480
coupled with an MX-20 with Map and Terrain and WX. Basically, EXACTLY
what I plan to buy.
As for the precession, I don't know what to say about that. I'd think
that any instrument that wasn't magnetically compensated would precess
eventually, but I don't know much about solid state gyros. That's
one Plus for Grand Rapids AHRS system....another reference sensor
for the system to cross-check itself.
As for my Wing Stand.....Here...let me measure it in the garage with
my laptop at my side....
2 2x4x10' For the lower outside spans
9 2x4x24" The vertical boards
4 2x4x28" Top and bottom Horizontal plates on inboard end
and Horizontal bottom plates on outboard end
Scraps of plywood cut as triangular reinforcements tacked on corners
4 casters
Scrap of carpet about 16" x 80" (maybe add a little length for extra)
Obviously the 2x4x24 and 28" boards were just cut from other 2x4x10'
boards....I just bought one size and let the waste happen as required.
Probably something like 6 boards 2x4x10 required. If you need closer
pics than the ones on my site, just let me know, but the photos at:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/20041019/index.html
should help a lot.
Especially this one before the wing leading edge was done:
(Note the extra 2x4 horizontal plate holding the outboard end.
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/20041019/RV200410170018.html
This one showing the inboard end:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/20041019/RV200410170019.html
This one showing the carpeting installed:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/wing/20041019/RV200410180031.html
This entire thing was just guesstimated together. The 28" width
was about right to allow just enough space in the cradle for a
minimum of width....to keep down the wing slop in the carpet.
The 24" height was just a little more than the minimum required
to keep the leading edge off the bottom of the rack with the
inboard spar supported at the other end. The 10' overall
length could just as easily be built as 12" if you wanted,
but 10' may be easier to move. 8' may work in a pinch. It's all
just screwed together with construction screws, and it took about
an hour or so to build. Pretty basic.
Bet you're having a blast deburring and dimpling those wings....
ah, I remember the days when I was a boy, deburring my wing skins. :)

Hmm, Rick, maybe you do get the dumb question of the week award. To
quote, "Direction is an electronic DG showing track". I believe that
means the TruTrak ADI is just displaying track from a GPS - it
doesn't actually sense magnetic fields . . .

From the sounds of it, the direction indication is all internal....built
in solid state gyro. I'm not sure about the pictoral pilot, but that
one actually may be integrated into an Autopilot somehow. I'm just
thrilled that the number isn't so much a heading selector, but a heading
display on this one.

None. They said that we'd see it advertized soon, and they'd
bring it out at Sun-n-Fun....for sale shortly thereafter, so we're
still 4 or 5 months away.

Solid state gyros are not susceptible to precession like mech gyros.
They can, however, fall victim to saturation. Big disscussion on this
on the vansairforce board (think it was topic "Dynon for IFR").
and just something to think about...

In theory it doesnt matter much for IFR, but tell that to the biz jet
that CFIT going into Aspen, CO a few years back, or the guy who was
cleared to decend and clipped a ridgeline. Anything you can do to
stack the deck in your favor without costing an additional arm and a
leg ($$$) could potentially save your bacon the one time you are not
completely 100% precise in shooting your approach or following a
course. I see youre going with the MX20 for terrain, good choice.
I just tend to be a bit taken aback by people who make blanket theory
statements like that.
No beef, just a little Solid-State info and my personal opinion on
terrain warnings.
Enjoy!

Let's not confuse heading with track. The TruTrak information
specifically says "Track". Now maybe they use a gyro to improve the
response rate of track in turns (GPS has typical 1 second update),
but without magnetic field information (heading) or GPS information
(track), any affordable gyro is going to drift.

No, it was not a dumb question. A non slaved mechanical directional
gyro also doesn't actually sense magnetic fields either.
No, the TruTrack DOES NOT have a GPS which its displaying track
from. It's a solid state DG and even those need to periodically re-
align with magnetic north. The question is, does the TruTrack ADI
have a magnotometer built in to automatically re-align periodically.

Thanks for pointing out the precession info. I have some learning to
do on saturation.
As for your statement about Terrain, my personal opinion is 100% in
agreement. I understand why technically it's true that in IFR
flight you shouldn't have to worry if you follow the rules. But, I
can't help but wonder how valuable that picture on your EFIS could
be if you were in an emergency....like engine-out IFR.

Yeah life as boy is good....deburring the skins don't seem all that bad after doing the tailcone, at least they are flat....funny side note, my father-in-law to be has been bugging me to help for months now and everytime he asks I really don't need extra hands...last night was different, he showed up eager to go...after about 100 holes and the fact I told him when he gets done to flip it over and do the other side, he retired to my recliner and retired from the aircraft building business and tried to figure out why I enjoyed it so much, maybe I should have started him countersinking the main spar instead.

Now isn't THAT familiar to me....every time my dad has asked if
I need help, it's at exactly the times when I need it the least.
NEVER when I have tons of dimpling, deburring, or tedious tasks
to do. The couple of times he's helped, it was during simple
assembly, where we got to argue about how to do it best....the
problem is, he doesn't like to *Read the Directions*. ;)

Thanks William!
I feel vindicated!!! My curiosity came from the lack of what would appear to be a way to realign the DG in flight....
Beginning avionics technician...but if you need me to take a look at your SMS and FCC I can do that!!! (Store Managment System and Fire Control Computer)

I've got a Fire Control Computer off of an old F-4 that we'll be
using on our RV-10. We're still working out which wing stations will
be best for the weapons pylons . . .
TDT
P.S. I guess we better install a black smoke system so we look like
an F-4, too . . .

Did you droop the horizonatal stabilizer too? Just a small 45 degree
bend on that spar shouldn't hurt much... And for realism sake you

"It was the last airplane I worked on where a hammer was an acceptable

AHHH so that's where Gummibear picked up his formal aircraft "hammer"
training.
Tom has been quoted several times as saying "The only tool I know how to use
is a hammer".
But that was before we built HRII N561FS. Now he's the spokesman at our Post
Young Eagles rivet class.
KABONG 8*)
lol....I thought about putting anhedral in the stab but could not get my
seaming pliers to lock onto the spar well enough.... I have an old field
jacket I refuse to wash because everytime I take it out it smells like
F-4...those were wonderful fun days except for the scars on my back from all
the drain tubes poking out the bottom. It was the last airplane I worked on
where a hammer was an acceptable tool.
F-4D's...Gun??? We don't need not stinking gun!! Then some yahoo comes up
with the SUU-23 gunpod....my poor knees. Hehe...was probably the same guy
who came up with the "smokeless" engine.

I spoke with a person at Trutrak today and obtained the following
info. The new ADI contains two solid state gyros and a pressure
sensor; these provide the pitch and bank info. The magnetic track is
provided by an external GPS input or optionally an integral GPS
receiver. Cost of the standalone (not part of an autopilot)unit will
be $1100 plus or minus; an integral GPS will add about $150.
