Author: "brianbollaert" <bbollaert@...> Time: Mon Dec 13, 2004 8:09 pm PST Link

Hello fellow 10 builders,
we are (my wife & i ) have the tailcone mostly done , and have
recieved the qb wings 2 weeks ago. my ? is to the group has anyone
had a problem with feeding the cables thru? (horizontal stab trim
tabs), also one of the bolts wd-415 for me broke off the plate. The
first hole (left & right) to feed thru it seems to me there will be
chafing shouldn't there be a (grommet or?) in this hole ? . We are
glad there is a forum for the 10 builders it is ( very ) hard to do
this alone ! ie when you have never built a plane before.

thanks

I couldn't get them in. I just gave up and was going to wait until
final installation. When I do get them in I don't want to take them
out. I think it will required some prayer, PAM Cooking Spray, a few
four letter words, more prayer because of the cussing, and lots of
luck.

Brian,

Ah yes,....the ole trim cables don't fit with the nutplates mounted to the access covers. Drill out/remove the nutplates from the covers, feed the cables through, screw the nutplates onto the cables and adjust, clecoing them as you adjust the nut on the cable, once you get it correct you will have to cleco the nutplate back to the cover, we discussed before why Van's called out for CS-4's, I think that's why, so you can attach the nuts while the cable is threaded through. Don't rivet them until final, final assembly As far as feeding them through, it is a pain and you may have to open up the oval holes that were made during construction of the HS, mine went through OK but with much "discussion" and sweet talking. Someone else mentioned they had to open the holes a bit, I used 12ga copper wore for a romex cable as a fishing tool to route the through. I can't for the life of me figure out why I did it at that point anyway...if I had to do it all over I would wait until I knew I would
not have to disassemble it again. Ops check the servo motor and wait until the HS is mounted for good.

I managed to break off the nut on one of them and will replace both
with clecos and then CS-4's for final - that's a good suggestion.
CS-4's or not, the welding was very thin and I was not too suprised
when it gave way.

It was hard to feed them thru - it helps to have the vertical stab
and rudder off and a small tool to guide the end along. I think one
of the plan changes was to increase the size of those first holes.
My experience was most of the issues were not with these forward
holes, but the rest heading aft.

In the end, I had it all roughly aligned to verify motion, etc.

When I took apart the tailcone, I left the cables in and
disconnected the lines from the trim motor hinge. This is hard to
do as the access is bad, but seemed easier than pulling out the
cables again....

If I had to do it all over I might wait until final assembly.
Overall, I think Van's has room for improvement in the trim system.
However, if you saw the complicated system of pulleys, wire, rods,
actuators, etc on my Piper Cherokee 180 then Van seems like a genius!
