Hi Brian,

I respect Van's safety oriented policy. They do not want to
encourage the installation of engines they have not thoroughly
tested… furthermore, they have a vested interest in selling
Lycoming. But we are working on them: our display was next to theirs
at Oshkosh and we discussed quite a bit with their chief engineer. He
understood that we are developing an engine line towards
certification, which is quite a different ball game than adapting an
automobile engine to the sport aviation market. They are waiting for
us to prove them that our engines are as safe or safer than
Lycomings… which they are! J Fair enough, we'll jump through their
hoops! BTW, I fully agree with your suggestion that we should work
with Van's. Now, we have to give them a reason to work with us: We
hope to be able to invite them to test-fly a Mistral-powered RV-7
before the end of 2005… an hopefully also a RV-10.

On the insurance front, we were able to insure our test-bed Piper
Arrow in no time and with no penalty compared to a regular Arrow.
However, it was obviously a certified airframe and the insurance was
limited to a closed list of approved pilots. It will be different
with experimental client aircraft. We had meetings with insurance
representatives which gave us a list of the data they wanted to see
and we are in the process of assembling it. Our collaboration with
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has impressed them and will
undoubtedly help the case. We hope to have the engine "insurable" by
March or April 2005, for Sun-n-Fun.

On the subject of tank sealing material, I must admit that we haven't
looked into it yet. My suggestion if you want your tanks to be able
to hold either gasoline or jet fuel is to call the manufacturer. Our
engineers wouldn't do anything else at this point in time… their
present priority is to get the kerosene engine running… and to
manufacture and deliver the gasoline engines we have on order. I am
sure you understand.

Do not hesitate to contact me for more information.

Yours sincerely,

Francois Badoux

Hello Francois:

I just picked up the info on your mistral from the
rv10@yahoogroups.com this is indeed exciting ! , one thing I must
say re: vans aircraft co is they do not encourage other exp engines
there are different reasons for this I am sure , however they say
that for safety and insurance reasons they strongly discourage it !,
I personally and I am sure many others in this group would love to
have a newer tech i.e. (fadec) kerosene engine in there aircraft (
not that the cont or lyco are not good engines just out of date ) and
we are building new aircraft !, the kerosene brings up a point we
are using something called (proseal) in the tanks is this going to
work with kerosene ?.
Also I highly recommend that your comp work closely with Vans
Aircraft with your mistral engines only this way can you dispel any
negativity , and this way assuring that we can safely use your engine
& also not have insurance problems ( we must have Vans blessing on
this ) !!!. thanks for reading this and looking forward to your
reply .

Regards

To answer your question: If you're using the stuff Van's sells, then
yes it should be fine with jet fuel. Here's the link to the product
literature. It specifically says that it's designed to withstand jet
fuel.
