Was wondering if any of you guys are considering one of these for your
10. They certainly look promising.
I've been following the progress of the co. because I planned on
building a 9 (maybe a 10 instead, see below) and because they're close
by me - I'm based at MWC and they're down at RAC, which I sometimes
also fly out of. The 200hp version looks like it should work in a 10
- installed weight is about 350lb, real close to a 6-cyl Cont or Lyc.
I've seen their proto on the 172 run, too (I think this is the 160hp
version). I was out at SkyCom avionics at UES picking up my 152 last
summer and for some reason they had their 172 out there, running it
up. It sounded great and I could tell from looking at the airframe
vibration (very little) that it was damn smooth, too.
Just maybe a good alternative to a Lyc.. but I sure don't want to be
one of the firsts. But also there are no RV FWF kits yet but I
understand they are coming.

I was / am considering them. The recent lack of info on their
progress is not impressing me though. I hope to be buying an engine
in 2006, but I'm not sure they'll be ready by then. Not too long ago
there were rumors they were having issues (heat / wrist pin problems)
but I've not heard anything solid that either proves the rumors or
disproves them. Right now I'm watching them hopefully, but starting
to look at other options.

Yep, they're neat. But, 200 hp won't hack it on a hot summer day here in
New Mexico. Even with all the promising alternative engines out there,
insurance can be an issue, along with resale value. As much as I seriously
long for anything new and modern to power my -10, I just don't see it adding
up at the bottom line. That might change in a few years, so, the jury is
still out.

Well, I hadn't heard any of that.
I may be able to report firsthand sometime soon as I'm hoping to get
to see their stuff and maybe (??) even get a demo ride in their
testbed Velocity (doubt they'll do that though). I will be down at
RAC (where they're based) tomorrow as a matter of fact to shoot some
practice ILS's with a pal.

I agree w/you that 200hp is probably a stretch at gross & high density
alt. But, they say that 200hp from a deisel feels more like 240hp
from a 4-stroke spark-ignig because of the better torque curve.
As to resale and insurance, they are planning on going for certification.

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY hope to be able to use one of their
engines. I've just finished my fuel tanks, and they have the extra
vent lines and larger fuel cap... I just wish they would put more
info on their website. Especially because my other issue is that I'm
no engineer, so if there's no FWF package (cowl and engine mount),
that might put their engine out of the running for me.
Any info you can get from them, I'd be very interested in. Wish I
lived closer, I'd go visit them myself.

Well, FWIW, I'm almost certain that at this point there are no RV FWF
kits available. I believe *someone* is working on them - they do talk
about them. Yeah, it's a big issue cause you'll need a custom mount
and maybe even different cowling??

I held, seen, been around, the 160 HP engine. Matter
of fact we had a deal to sign 5 of the first 200HP
engines in production in production. The engine was
unable to produce that power due to heat and wrist pin
problems....I actually HAD a 160 HP engine in my shop
in Canada here for awhile.....It is a great
concept...I runs like a detroit truck engine...with
blower and turbo...and is very loud....We were to put
then in Equipment that was to be lifted with
helicopters....I wish them the best of luck
though....and Success..

Were there any problems with the 160hp model? They have those flying
in a couple aircraft. Velocity has inked a deal with them.
They're loud, but they're smooth too.
I will be getting a demo in their testbed Velocity at some point, but
right now the right seat is taken up by computer equipment which
they're taking out in April.

well the 160 seemed to work well....fuel consumption

real problems....i hope they get it to work...cause it

I'm still holding out for Deltahawk - or something like it - but
will delay the fuel tanks as long as I can before committing....
A turbocharged 200 HP engine is a better engine hot and high then a
normally aspirated lycoming - provided you can control the heat. I
believe the other diesel engine out there (see diamond aircraft and
the DA40-TDI (sold in europe) and the soon to be US diamond twin use
a modified mercedes diesel. I believe they have had heat problems
at altitude.... the turbo charger of a flat rated engine works the
hardest at altitude and engines can encounter problems with very
high intake temps. One of the advantages of turbo diesel over gas
is that high intake temps are not bad news (detonation, etc) but it
is a loss of power as hot air is less dense.
If you want to check out another engine option, try
www.turnkeyengine.com Before you get too excited about a brand
new, complete 450 HP LS1 engine for ~ $8,000 (check out the sand
buggy configuration) you should know the downside is the engine
weight is ~ 450 lbs.... not including radiators, fluid, reduction
gear, etc. Oh well!
I've been flying my Piper between Hillsboro, OR and the San
francisco bay area. On Tuesday the head winds were 40 kts at 10,500
which left me at a 80 kt ground speed burning ~ 10 gallons per hr.
(O-360) Actual fuel at altitude was a little less than that as 10
gallons = 75% at ~ 8000 but I paid the price to climb over most of
the rocks and into smooth air (despite the headwind)
Would have been nice to have a ~ 160-170 kt air speed... my ground
speed would have been 50% faster.
Looking forward to the trip report on the engine visit.
