Anyone have a problem dimpling the last two trailing edge holes on
the elevator CW ribs? The last two holes are too tight to get
anything in there. Looks like the plans call for 426 rivets too.

I either used a pop-rivet dimiple die set, or a vice-grip dimpler
for those I think.
If you don't have those 2 tools, you really will want them.

Yeah, those were pretty tight. If I remember correctly, I used my vice grip dimplers, but I have heard of using the pop rivet dimple dies. I think they used dramatically shortened nails to get the dies and nail in there tho... Creativity is the key, but you can dimple those!!

I used a dull chisel polished up on the debur wheel. I have had to use that chisel 5 times on the rest of the plane. Randy

Thanks, I bought a set of vise grips thinking I could squeeze the
dimple die together. If that doesn't work I'll have to order the
tool. I'll let you know how it goes. I also looked at cutting the
pop rivet dimpler to see if there was enough left to grab with the
squeezer.

If you get desperate, you may be able to use the pop-rivet
dies, with a needle-nose pliers or something like that, if
you can keep them centerd. or use the chisel method mentioned
before.

OK, I got it done. It took several days though to figure out and
find an approach. Holidays and family as well as hockey tournaments
for the kids provided lots of entertainment.
Also, completing my instrument training takes lots of time too.
Also, had a new job offer and did interviews and agonizing over
changing jobs. As it turns out the RV10 is what caused me to make
up my mind and stay where I'm at. I love building this airplane.
Hey, didn't James say that once?
So, I used the close pop rivet die set without the center nail. I
used masking tape to center the hole of the female die inside the
rib. I placed the male portion of the die over the hole and used
the needle-nosed vise grips to squeeze the die together.
Perfect dimple!!!
Happy New Year. It would be great to fly the New Year in. I'll
have to try it some time.

Dave, next time use a very short piece of nail(that does not go completely through both dimple dies) instead of the piece of tape to center the dies on the rivet hole. Carl

The masking tape was handy and my side cutters could not be found.
I would not have come up with the very short nail to center the
die. I was thinking along the lines of a longer nail to be grabbed
by the sqeezer. Guess I should have been thinking shorter. Must be
a male mental block :-) Great idea though.
