Add me to the group who have created an extra hole while dimpling skins.
I was wondering what people that have had this happen are doing. I don't
feel it's worth a skin re-order, but wanted opinions.
I was thinking of just putting a pop rivet in it and letting the paint guys
feather it out or something. Is that a viable solution? If the paint guys
try to fix it, is it better to leave the hole open, or put a pop rivet in
there. Or maybe dimple it correctly and put a AN426AD3-3 in there so it's
flush and easier to hide?
Thanks...
Makes me want to build a dimple table with recessed c-frame before the wing
skins get ordered. :)

I'm also a member of this not so elite club. When I examined the
extra hole closely I could see the start of some cracking from the
stresses. I drilled the hole to #30 and then set an oops rivet in it.
I also resisted making a table for my C-frame, however it turns out
that it's much easier to have one and not that difficult or time
consuming to make. If you make a frame out of 2x2 and then attached
a 1/4" thick 2'x4' piece of fiberboard it will be exactly the right
thickness. Drill a hole in the middle for the dimple die and you're
done! Also consider a table for backriveting. I used my router and
carved a section out of a 2'x4' piece of 3/4" MDF. Neither of these
will take much time or money but will make a a HUGE difference.
I've uploaded pictures of both into the Bob C area in the Photos
section. In the background you can see the forward fuselage section
and firewall ready for mating with the mid-section of the fuselage.
Good luck!

It's all pretty flexible. In your case, you said you created an extra
hole. If it were me, I'd just add a rivet. You won't notice it any
more than all the other rivets when you're done. In fact, I wouldn't
even bother telling any paint guys about it. I'd just use the
AN426AD3-3 and let it be. On the nose of the wing, where the stall
switch goes, they just fill with rivets the 2 holes on the right
wing. Heck, if the single hole you made looks way out of place
where it is...would it look better if you threw in a partner right
next to it. :)
Now, if people make a mistake on an existing hole, you just do
what you think you need to do. Like I had one hole that I
accidently countersunk on the skin, in an area that was countersunk
for the other rivets. I just made sure I didn't dimple the spar
underneath, so that I could rivet normally.
Go with the flow. Just don't mess up that "Key Rivet". You know,
the one rivet that if you make a mistake, your whole airplane
comes apart. ;)

Sean,
Put a rivet in the "new" hole and continue. The only caution is to
make sure it is not too close to another rivet (2X the rivet width
if I remember correctly).
You are not the first, nor will you be the last to do this.
I usually place the male die through the hole of the skin and start
it in the female die before striking the mallot blow. Just a
suggestion. Doesn't mean I won't follow your lead and make a new
hole. There are enough of those holes to be dimpled to get out of
sync and wack the tool too early!
I have to say, Man there a LOT of holes in those wings! And I
thought the tail cone had a bunch!

If it's someplace you can put in an extra flush rivet (i.e. there's
nothing behind it or you can countersink the area behind it), that's
the route I would take. Then when you paint, if you want it
invisible, it can be filled with filler or bondo or something.
Could be worse, I was letting the neighbor kid help dimple the screw
holes on my tank skin....and he hit the C-frame off center and
somehow the skin jumped off the die...so I have an extra (large) hole
in an area I can't fill because it has to be flush with the spar.
And of course it's on the TOP skin. Needless to say, he's not
allowed to help dimple anymore.

Ouch! You're right, it could be worse. Now I'm glad I don't have that many
