My first kit arrives tomorrow. I am assuming that the complete set
of plans will be in the kit. Is that true? So I open the kit and
do an inventory........what is the recommended next step. I have
done about half of the training kit and expect to get the second
half finished next week. I am very excited.......

When you receive your emp kit, you will only get the instructions for
that part of the kit. This is something I wish Van's would change,
because when I build my RV-9A, at least they send you the complete
plans on 11 x 17 for the entire plane so you can look ahead at how
the pieces fit together. Although the plans are much better with the
10, the instructions and diagrams are all on the same page so you
will not have to be jugling full size plans around as you move on to
different sections.
Yes, get your inventory out of the way and get some sort of divider
drawers to sort all the rivets. I arranged mine and the labeled each
drawer like 426AD3-3.5 or 470AD4-7, etc.

You will only receive plans for the kit you are receiving not the entire airplane. After the inventory start building. I would strongly recommend following the sequence outlined in the plans, this will prevent building yourself into a corner. The plans are much improved in this area compared to earlier models. I would not spend too much time organizing the shop etc. I would do that as the need is seen as you build.
Good luck.

Ren': After inventory what I did was to get a couple of parts divider
cabinets from Lowes Home improvement to put parts in. I find it easier to just pull
drawers out with the rivet callout or hardware that is being used. I put a
piece of scotch take over the front of each drawer and used a marker to label the
drawer. Works great for me. You can add to the bins when the other kits
arrive. I have a 60 drawer and one that has 6 large drawers in the bottom part of
the parts drawers. I find it far easier then working out of bags. Have fun

You will receive the plans for the emp/tailcone kit only along with a
couple of poster size drawings of the plane. Many of use framed
these and have them hanging in the shop for inspiration and to be
able to show visitors what we're building.
You will want to get a couple of parts cabinets from your local home
store for organizing rivets, bolts, etc. Also consider making a
dimpling table (and back rivet table) - these will make your life
much easier. Coincidently, I just responded to another builder's
question with info and uploaded pictures of mine.
Congratulations and welcome aboard!

Yeah, like Ray mentioned, you'll only get the tail kit plans. No big
deal for the most part...the plans are awesome. The positive side of
only getting partial plans for us right now is that it's giving
Van's time to revise them when builders get to the newest steps before
they ship the plans to the newcomers.
so, you get the kit, do your inventory (do a full inventory too, I did,
except for minor nuts and bolts in the baggies...and you may actually
find something missing), then get your trays labeled like Ray said.
But, when that's all done, just take a deep breath, grab the parts for
the first couple pages and get to work! It flows very well, and in
a few short weeks you'll be wondering what the heck you got yourself
into. ;) In a month or so, you may have your first major part, and
you'll find that your attitude gets better with every completion...
and worse with every deburring session. I find it hard to get myself
started on a new section. I almost dread going into the garage because
I know I have to deal with deburring, dimpling, and priming again.
But, as soon as I start, the progress goes so fast that you forget all
of that. It's a series of minor projects, so you have many times
you get to sit back and admire your progress. If you get into the
tail kit and wonder how you're going to finish, it's a good time
to start thinking about QuickBuild parts.
Good luck! Grab an EAA member if you can find one, and have them
come over to help. It makes the time go faster. So does a TV
and Radio in the shop. I stuck an old 450mhz PC, with a $30 Ebay
TV/FM Radio Tuner card in it out there, with some great PC subwoofer
stereo speakers and a StreamZap remote. I now have Radio, Hundreds
of MP3's, and live TV that keeps me company, as I usually work
alone.
So, how'd you choose your N-Number?

Ren' - I'm on the fuselage kit and have 4 of the 60 drawer units, but
I like to have as much as possible in labeled drawers - you might get
by with 3 units if you don't have empty drawers as "spacers".

The tail number...
N (simple, has to be in US)
4 (because the rest of the number would not work (already taken))
23 ( My wife's High School basketball number)
C (Chance, my 1 year old surprise (I am 47))
F (Felker, last name)
Not easy picking a good tail number these days, our first twenty or
so choices were taken.
Thanks for the help.

That's great. It's always interesting to see how people
choose theirs.
Mine is:
N (of course:
10 (RV-10)
4 ("For")
CD (Colleen and Danielle, the 3 and 5 year olds)
Funny thing is the RV-10 physically looks a lot like
a Cirrus, and most of the Cirrus N-Numbers end in CD.
When I picked mine, I had to try real hard to find one
that would allow me CD that wasn't already owned by Cirrus.
Might just trick some people on the ramp.
