I just received some great pictures from the Lancair folks showing
their intended molded console/panel. I've posted them in the "Bob C"
folder in the Photos section. Following is the email:
Here are some early pictures of the soon to be RV 10 molded panel.
It's the very early stages, I just wanted to give you an idea. There
will be metal inserts for the two large insets which will be laser cut
to whatever instrument set up is chosen. There will also be a metal
insert for the center console that can be cut for radios, circuit
breakers, or whatever. The armrest will open for a chart case, and
you'll notice the rear has a "ledge" for rear seat power points
(radios,
games, whatever) or headset jacks, or both. The center console has a
"circle" for the fuel selector and the sides of the arm rest are
indented to allow for easier seat movement.
Once we get our first one out of the new mold, painted, inserts, etc,
I'll send another picture if you're interested. It will look much
different at that point and it will be nice!

Looks sweet. Does the center console slip over the existing "tunnel"
in the aircraft?

I fell violated. Tony comes to my house and uses my plane to make the prototype panel "I get the first one" and Bob gets the photos first! I asked Tony last Wed to send me some photos. Oh Well. I will have several photos of the accural panel when it shows up. Randy

Randy,
I think I'd rather have the actual panel than the pictures... Has he

It appears so. I've been working in that area a lot lately and it
looks like it probably replaces the existing tunnel cover and screws
directly to the fuselage ribs. You can use the circular fuel
selector area as a point of reference for positioning. In
anticipation of some sort of console, I made the mount for my Andair
fuel valve so the height can be adjusted with washers for final fit.

I was wondering about that!!! I saw the photos and thought "Geez, I
know they used Randy's to make the prototype out of, but Randy would
have sent me the pics as soon as he got them...I wonder what's up..."
Not that it's a bad thing for Bob to have the photos, but I woulda'
thunk they'd have at least shown them to you before everyone else,
seeing as you're the one providing the plane with which to design
it.
Now, Bob's comment was that it's in the very early stages. Does
that fit with what they're telling you about the progress
on the panel? When do you expect to see it show up? You gotta
be pretty anxious about it by now.

Tim, as we discussed months ago, I am making several mods to the RV-10
parts and specs. Randy swore to us at dinner that he was building a
"Strictly by the plans and parts RV". He just wanted to be the first -
Flying ;-). Those comments I had on modification to my tunnel sure look like
Bob has spelled the beans from Debauw Skunk Werks - Oregon. What a great
design!
I also like his blazing the trail that a lot of fine features having gone
into Lancair projects can also go into Van's creations. And there is
nothing forcing RV builders to avoid embracing these design enhancements
when they are well thought out. It doesn't have to stop at just Avionics
either.
I think one of the glaring improvements would be to get rid of the 1960's
Ford van air vent doors for the rear passengers and optionally punch the
skin from the factory with NACA vent induction that fits the naca vent Van's
already sells. Those doors are the first thing to leak Oregon rain on
anything near them if the flying product is not always hangared. We were at
31 degrees in freezing drizzle this morning.
Happy New Year and progress to all in '2005.
John Cox
P.S. James, I sure miss your web cam and daily posts.

Wow! I figured that the pictures would generate a buzz, but never
guessed that it would be because I got them first! It's clear that
the folks that are developing these sorts of things need access to
the actual fuselages. It looks like (with Randy's help) this will be
a NICE product. Let's also keep in mind that Cleveland Tools is also
developing a console (along with other products) for our RV-10s. In
their case, they aren't borrowing a plane - they're building their
own! I haven't seen their console yet but if history is an
indicator, it will be a quality product at a very competitive price.
Ain't competition great!

No Pricing. I think they need to complete one unit to come up with the cost. I can tell you that they wanted about the same for labor as Pacific Coast Avionics. The thing I liked was the way they finish off the panels. After going for a tour at the factory I decided they were getting my business. They are building my panel and supplying my wire harnesses for the fuse and wings (I already have the wing harnesses). They are suppose to come over in the next 2 weeks for a final fit before they build the inserts, cut the panels and install the avionics. I will keep you posted. Randy

Randy,
I think I'd rather have the actual panel than the pictures... Has he
given you any idea of pricing or availability?

Looks sweet. Does the center console slip over the existing "tunnel"

Hello John, Good to here from you. When we did the design work on the panel and console the big issue we all had was to make it work without any modifications to Van's design. The fuel selector is very low and tight to the tunnel cover. When they bring the sample over to try we want to make sure the fuel selector will work in the stock configuration. I have all of the fuel lines run and don't want to have to revamp any of it. If I have to we can change out the shaft. I have to take the selector apart and see if I can have a new on machined. If it will fit fine as is I won't have to mess with it. Randy

Subject: RE: [RV10] Molded Console/Panel Pictures
