Home -> RV-4 topic: Lack of activity...

Author: Scott <acepilot@...> Time: Tue Jun 26, 2001 4:35 pm PDT Link

I got an email from yahoo groups stating that our list activity is too
low. If we do not use it we will lose it. I guess I wouldn't be
heartbroken since there are only three of us! Therefore, I think I will
let it slide. We can always start it up again if we find more
Wisconsinites who are interested in RV's...

I will contribute something.

Got the electric trim and the electric flaps installed so was able to fly
to the Rocky Mountain Flyin in Longmont CO. This was my and my sons first
long XC in the rv and the first time I had flown over the mountains on
central Colorado. We left on friday morning and flew to Farmington, New
Mexico. Stopped for fuel and breakfast. While we were there were joined
by 3 other rvs. 2 going to Longmont and 1 going further east. While
waiting to depart the tower closed the runway for a couple of minutes which
turned into 20 minutes. When they opened it back up, I was number 1 of 4
rvs in line to depart. Hoped I would make a good takeoff with so many
other rvers looking on. We 3 rvs flew direct to La Veta pass and then on
into Pueblo, CO where we contacted Pueblo approach and then used flight
following to get us all of the way into Longmont. After landing, we
watched others land and it seemed like one rv-6 after another was coming
in. RV's were definately in the majority at the flyin. The flyin had
someone to take you to your hotel and bring you back each day. Which
really helped because Enterprize leasing was out of cars. They had a
barbeque Friday night for the vendors which they invited us to join. A big
thunder storm had came up about 4 PM and we spent about an hour helping to
hold down the registration tent to keep it from blowing away. Some
skydivers were still up in the air as the storm came in and 3 of them got
caught in the downdraft and blown out into a subdivision and injured and
had to be taken to the hospital. Saturday, the Rocky Mountain Aviators had
a barbeque for rvers in one of the hangers at the airport and there seemed
to be about 100 people there and lots of food. It was hot. We found out
the secret of the water was to buy a bottle of water at the FBO for 1.00
and then refill it from their fountain for free during the day. There was
a constant line of people waiting for refills. Besides, there was a really
cute and friendly girl there to talk to. The guy there making pancakes for
breakfast had it down to an art and was able to put out an unbelievable
amount of pancakes in an extremely short time. Our ride into the airport
Sunday forgot about us so we got in there late. We were planning on an
early departure but got out about 10AM.W We altered our route back to go
over the mountains instead of south thru Pueblo to save some time. We
crossed Wolf Creek Pass at 13,000 feet which was the highest we got during
the trip. It was incredibly beautiful from the air. This is the first
airplane I have had that allowed me to go this route. In my previous
grumman yankee or Cessna 150, I would have had to go around the whole
range. The clouds were really building and it was getting really bumpy
when we landed at Farmington so we just fueled quickly and headed for
Phoenix. Had to divert around 2 rain storms and the air got real
rough. Diverted to Holbrook, AZ and landed as my son was talking sincerely
about throwing up. We decided to spend the night after the airport
manager, Allen offered us the use of a courtesy car for free, sold us
avgas for 2.05 a gallon and gave us some tips on things to see, one of
which was the historic court house and jail. The jail was made back east
and imported and assembled at the site. It was more like an animal cage
than a jail to me. It was in use up until 1976. Didnt look anything at
all like what the western jails look like in the movies or on Gunsmoke. I
definately would not want to spend any time in it. Got up the next morning
and flew back to Deer Valley airport. This turned out to be a good
shakedown trip for us. Realized we needed more pockets and trays to hold
all of the traveling accesories. Got some good ideas from seeing other
rv-4s on the field. Was really happy with the way the rv flew during the
trip. Changed tanks every 30 minutes and the wings didnt seem to get
hardly out of trim. Will install the manual trim this week, but dont think
it is really necessay at this point. We averaged about 165-175 mph going
and coming at around 2500 rpm with a wood prop. With my 13 yr old son in
the back and some baggage, it took almost full forward trim to trim
out. Thinking seriously about putting the sensenich prop or the Landoll
harmonic balance on the nose to bring the CG forward some. Found out that
the electric trim doesnt have near as much movement as the previous manual
trim allowed. Mac has a different servo with more travel that is the same
size. Might consider installing it to give myself more travel on the trim
tab. Had the master relay not engage a couple of times during the
trip. Replaced it today with a new one and also installed a diode across
the terminal which is supposed to increase the life of the relay according
to Electric Bob Well, that is it for the trip. Now looking forward to
Arlington!

Hey I'm a Californian and I'm interested in RVs - RV3, 4 and 7A.

Thanks for the moral support, but Yahoo has some policy that requires
"X" amount of activity and with just 3 members on this specific list,
they said they would cancel it. Apparently they haven't ;)

I believe you'd be better off joing the matronics list at
www.matronics.com if you aren't already a member of their list(s)...they
have MANY!

So long, fellow members.

I just finished replacing my Narco Escort II nav-com with a new Microair 2 1/4 inch round radio from Australia and a new stereo intercom.  Never use the nav anymore anyway since I got a Garmin GPS III Pilot. Sure is nice to have a standby freq now and reception is lots clearer now.  And I can plug in a portable mp3 or cd player too.  Just have to find a place to put them now.  Wouldnt you know it.  I went for the first flight today and the gps is not working for 150 nautical miles from Phoenix.  My next action is to get some heat into the beast.  She is sure cold lately. <G> .  Ordered the heat muffs from Robbins wings.  Got to decide how and where to penetrate the firewall.  Also ordered the firewall mounted battery case for the Odyessy battery.  Going to move my batter up front, also the master and starter solenoids and make center console where the battery used to be into a storage compartment for tools, etc.

Hello all,
I think I goofed....
Yesterday I got a message from someone who had replied to a message I
had posted long ago on my RV4Wisconsin group here on yahoo. Somehow his
message came from the plain RV4 group here at yahoo. As far as I know,
the RV4 group is still here with 70 members. It has not been
cancelled. My own group (RV4Wisconsin) was the one with 3 members and
not enough activity to meet yahoo requirements, and was thus cancelled.
Sorry for the misunderstanding!!
